HUNTERSVILLE ??Taking care of a Great Dane isn?t cheap.

Start with food, medicine and shots.
Lisa Reid knows the costs well. She provides those for her five Great Danes, as well as 90 other dogs at the Great Dane Rescue of the Carolinas, at 10425 Mount Holly-Huntersville Road.
That?s why in March the society opened its resale store, off South Old Statesville Road. The store exists as a fundraising arm for the society and accepts donations from people around the lake.
?We operate strictly on donations and help,? said Reid, the co-founder of Great Dane Rescue. ?We?ve got a core group of about 20-25 volunteers who help us out by donating their time feeding and taking care of the dogs before they?re adopted.?
The resale store, open Tuesdays-Saturdays from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., has received furniture, house accessories, camping gear, sports equipment and a limited amount of electronics. It?s more of a high-end resale store than your typical thrift store. All proceeds go directly to the Great Dane Rescue.
The economy, Reid said, has made it more difficult to care for so many animals.
?We started the resale store so we could get more (donations) for the rescue,? Reid said.
Open in Huntersville since 1995, the rescue lists mostly Great Danes, but other breeds are also welcome.? Those interested in adopting can visit one of the facility?s two monthly open houses, which are from 1-4 p.m. the first and third Sunday of every month,
Why specialize in Great Danes? Core volunteer Susan Myerowitz said specialized foster homes for dogs are one of the biggest needs in pet adoption.
?There?s a need for a rescue (facility) for every one,? Myerowitz said. ?It?s safer within their own group because people are trained to work with Great Danes and they know them better than others. We?re looking to find the right match for every dog and every person (or family).?
Every dog adopted from the rescue has updated shots and has been treated for heartworms.
She said the organization brings one dog to the resale store each day in hopes customers will see and want to adopt one of the dogs.
?They?re wonderful family pets,? Reid said. ?People don?t realize the help they need when they?re brought in. You don?t realize it when you don?t see it.?
The joint work between Reid, her husband Don and volunteers like Myerowitz comes with a great reward when the dogs are adopted.
The resale store gives residents a chance to help out without having to donate money.
?Knowing that we?re all (helping) get the dogs in the best possible home is the best reward you could ask for,? Myerowitz said.

??Great Dane Puppies 1 year old or younger: $400
??Great Danes and mixes 1-5 years old: $350
??Great Danes and mixes older than 5 years: $250
??All other mixed-breed dogs: $150
