Restaurant review: Sunday, 169 Hemingford Road, London, N1

Many moons ago I read these pages and wondered what it would take for a restaurant to score 10 out of 10. Now I write for them and I still haven't a clue. The problem arises, I think, because some people define 10 out of 10 as "as good as it gets", yet I had long conceived of 10 out of 10 much as I conceived of five out of five or 100 per cent ? in other words, perfection. Something that is incapable of being improved. But no meal is perfect. Every meal can be improved. Thus a dilemma: go through life as a restaurant critic never awarding 10 out of 10, or accept that there are some meals that, though not perfect, deserve that highest rank? My inclination is towards the latter.

Besides, perfection is over-rated. What is it, anyway? I think perfection is: the first day of a Test at Lord's; a pi?a colada in the Caribbean; the Wailers' first album; Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption; my father's arithmetic. You will note that all these things, while undeniably worthy of 10 out of 10, are capable of being improved. For instance, at Lord's there are always posh, fat drunkards you'd rather didn't disrupt the view; but you'd still get the bus home thinking, "Dear me, those Australians are rubbish, but that was a 10 out of 10 day."

Sunday in Islington, open for six weeks now, is my kind of perfect. On the two basic metrics which this page takes an interest in ? taste and value ? it is not far off incapable of being improved. Like many a good establishment, it is really two restaurants in one. Though closed on Monday, on other mornings it is a brunch palace. Delicious French toast with banana and maple syrup; fresh fruit and cereals with rich, smooth yoghurt; all manner of eggs and sizzling bacon and salmon with hollandaise; pastries from paradise; excellent coffee and teas ? all your favourites, done superbly. I can easily imagine long, lazy Saturdays armed with a rumbling belly, hot thirst and a wad of magazines spent here, and the odd Sunday, too. But on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sunday also does dinner. And this is no ordinary dinner.

Six starters, five mains, four desserts, three sides, two kinds of booze and not a single dud between them. There are no spirits, so the alcohol is either wine ? white, red, ros? ? or an Aperol spritz (bit dear at ?7.50, but lovely for a summer evening). Among the starters, there are pork rillettes with bread-and-butter pickles and toasted sourdough (?7); juicy buffalo mozzarella with tomato salad, pesto and Parmesan croutons (?7); cured duck breast with cantaloupe melon, pickled ginger and soy (?7.50); grilled sardines with beetroot, watercress and gremolata dressing (chopped garlic, parsley, and lemon zest ? ?7.50); and watermelon-and-feta salad with pistachio-and-mint dressing (?7.50). Every one of these was blow-the-mind brilliant.

But they are as nothing to the ? dare I say it ? perfect salt-and-pepper crispy squid with papaya salad (?7.50), a wondrous union of contrasting textures and flavours. I've never thought to put a tropical twang on top of squid, but the freshness of this papaya, combined with the peppery batter on the squid, is just sublime.

A cod fillet (?14.50) comes apart in gorgeous little flakes, and sits very happily among chorizo, cannellini beans and saffron potatoes. The ricotta-stuffed courgette flowers with caponata are a steal at ?12; the rib-eye with chips and Caf? de Paris butter, at ?18.50, is cheaper than you'll find in most of London; and there is linguine vongole (?13.50) and a lamb fillet (?15), too.

The desserts ? ?5.50 each ? are a fabulous bargain. White-chocolate mousse with raspberry sorbet and shortcake; baked Alaska with lemon curd and berries; custard tart with raspberries; and, best of all, the Sunday Sundae: hot brownie, cold ice-cream, succulent cherries, and enough to convince me there may be a heaven.

I'm thinking hard about faults, really I am. The staff are all smiley and attentive, so none there. The interior is neither good nor bad, so none there. The food is almost incapable of being improved. Basically perfect.

Oh yes ? the Aperol spritz is a quid too dear. That's about it. So in the circumstances, I couldn't possibly award my first 10 out of 10.

US Army keen to learn from India's counter-insurgency operations

WASHINGTON: Impressed by the Indian Army's successful counter-terrorism operations, the US Army Chief has proposed joint training between the armies of the two countries.

Noting that there is much to learn between the militaries of the two countries, US Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno called for joint training to benefit from India's experiences in counter-insurgency in a tough environment and difficult terrain.

"We would love to do some joint training in the mountainous environment, because what the Indian Army has learned over the years, we would love to share what we learned about counter-insurgency and compare experiences and see how we can learn from each other and how we can direct that to use in the future, so for me it is something that is important," Odierno told PTI in an interview.

Odierno, 58, during a rare trip to India late last month, met his Indian counterpart General Bikram Singh besides holding meetings with Defence Minister A K Antony and visiting the Northern Command headquarters in Udhampur.

Highly impressed by the Indian military's successful counter-insurgency operations, he said, the US would like to learn from the Indian experience as to how to fight terrorists in a tough environment and difficult terrain.

When asked if the US would like to have joint exercises in Jammu and Kashmir where the terrain is difficult like that of Afghanistan, Odierno said he would like to look at that.

Odierno said that this is something that the US may be interested in but still need to take a look at by sending people to train in these types of environments.

"I think, we would like to look at...we send may be send some people to learn how you train and operate in those environment and those are kind of had some initial discussions on...much more has to be done. It is things like that we would be interested in," he said.

"Everybody recognises, India has so much in common with the US and that it is important for us to sustain a strong long-lasting relationship," the US Army Chief of Staff said.

"It is important for us to sustain a long-term relationship of one that is equal, one that respects each other's strategic autonomy, but that one that enables us to learn from each other to develop together, to deal with many of the issues that we face around the world," he said.
Indian and US troops have already held joint exercises in the past in the mountainous Ladakh region in 2003.

Chris Sieroty - Does daily fantasy sports blur the line between fantasy and gambling?

Sports fans are wagering thousands of dollars on the performance of professional athletes each day online, and it is all perfectly legal.

Known as daily fantasy sports, the games are part of an exemption to federal law banning online gambling. In daily fantasy sports, winners aren?t determined by the outcome of a single game or the performance of a single player.

Most fantasy competitions ? football or baseball ? last a season, but more and more players are looking for their daily fantasy fix. Critics argue that turning fantasy sports into a daily competition edges it closer to being a game of chance that?s essentially equivalent to placing a bet at race and sports books in Las Vegas.

?I?m not going to give a legal opinion,? John Kindt, an emeritus professor of business and legal policy at the University of Illinois, said Thursday. ?But what I would say is that this was not the intent of Congress when it prohibited online gambling.?

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 regulated online gambling by prohibiting gambling businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with a wager. The law excluded fantasy sports and legal intrastate and inter-tribal gaming.

?Fantasy sports interests argued that this was a season-long effort and substantially a game of skill,? Kindt said in a phone interview. ?That appears to have changed with daily fantasy sports.?

Kindt also described fantasy sports as an ?introductory venue? to sports gambling.

?Young people love sports, love to take risks and don?t realize that gambling can become problematic,? he said. ?Fantasy sports on a daily basis is pushing open the door to these concerns.?

Today, there are 35 million fantasy sports players in the U.S. and Canada, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. The fantasy sports industry generates $3.07 billion annually from entry fees and direct spending on subscriptions to magazines and websites catering to fantasy players.

By comparison, casino visitors in Nevada wagered more than $3.4 billion on sporting events in 2012, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

The FSTA doesn?t separate revenue figures for daily fantasy sports. However, there are plenty of websites offering daily games for money, including FanDuel, Play Daily Fantasy Sports and Cantor Fitzgerald?s Top Line Gaming Labs.

Certain states continue to have more restrictive laws. But in Nevada and other states that allow fantasy sports to be played for money, the daily contests are essentially unregulated.

Kindt said although states can have parallel anti-gambling laws, Internet gambling is a federal issue. He said any outright state ban on gambling through fantasy sports would conflict with federal law.

He also argued that those advocating for the legalization of sports gambling don?t understand the consequences of opening the door to sports gambling nationwide.

?It would destroy amateur, collegiate and Olympic sports,? Kindt said. ?The NCAA and professional leagues are still extremely concerned about sports gambling, and are seeking to protect the integrity of sports by keeping out gambling.?

Selling FSBO... Realtor comes into picture after the fact? - Zillow

Commission just like everything else is negotionable, if you do not want to pay full commission then negotiate that. I beleive buyers agents usually get 2.5-3%. You could play hardball and say no commission but you could lose the sale. I would try to negotiate your the commission down down to 1-1.5% since your FSBO and the buyer found you on their own, if the agent has a problem with it and the buyers really want the house let them pay the rest of his commission.

Bridging loans and bridging finance - iccwest

Most people require a loan at some point in their life. There are many specific types of loans that you can choose from. However, you should be clear about the main differences between bridging loans and bridging finance, in the event you are offered either of these products.

Bridging finance is usually available to larger organisations, building contractors for instance or property developers who will get regular injections of finances from clients who have purchased properties from the developer. Thus, bridging finance can aid a developer to complete their project with easily available funds, secured against the development, while being reimbursed by clients. These loans are far less risky for the lender because the property developer or borrower will acquire a secured cash flow from customers. The lender knows that there is property acting as security against the loan which can be realised in case the borrower has difficulty repaying the loan for any reason. In addition to property developers, homeowners who have decided to sell a home and invest in a new one may do so with bridging finance also. The bank will advance the cash for a lower rate of interest than market rate to get a brand new house while they wait for the payment from selling the family home. However the time period during which the bridging loan needs to be repaid depends on the lenders terms.

A closed bridging loan http://www.financemyhouse.net, for instance, will need to be repaid in a pre-determined time frame (hence the term closed bridge), whereas an open bridging loan may have a more flexible repayment term.

Bridging loans are short term loans which are generally given to smaller clients or companies for periods ranging from a few weeks to few years. Interest rates on this type of bridging loan will be above bank rates to reflect the risk to the lender and the cost of realising the value of any assets used as security if the loan is defaulted on. There may also be a lower loan to value (LTV) on such loans in order to minimise the lenders risk. However, if you repay the bridging loan within the specified time period, you are able to close these loans in advance of the agreed term, often incurring mo exit fees.

Bridging loans have become much more popular in recent times due to the reluctance of mainstream lenders to lend to ?risky clients? post credit crunch. They are often used to solve cash flow issues, caused by a large tax bill for example, and they can be returned and closed when the issue has been resolved.

?

Masthaven? has been offering bridging loans since 1983 and the company prides itself on? its transparency. There are no hidden fees in our terms, hence the company?s? clients don?t get any nasty surprises upon completion.

?

Additional? benefits of using Masthaven are there are no exit fees ? ever ? and interest is? charged on a daily basis. This combined with Masthaven?s market leading rates? means that the borrower is really getting the best deal out there in the short? term lending arena.

(AP) ? Democratic governors say they are nervous about getting the new federal health care law implemented but add they will be better positioned in next year's elections than many of their Republican counterparts who have resisted the far-reaching and politically polarizing measure.

Several of the 12 Democratic governors shared that sense of nervousness-veiled-by-optimism at the National Governors Association in Milwaukee Saturday.

"There's some angst, and you can see that from the decision the administration made a couple weeks ago," said Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. "There's a lot of work to do."

By next Jan. 1, most people will be required to have insurance. States have to set up exchanges by Oct. 1, when uninsured individuals can start buying subsidized private health coverage that would go into effect Jan 1, and businesses with more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours a week were supposed to offer affordable health care to their workers or risk a series of escalating tax penalties.

But businesses said they needed more time, and on July 2, President Barack Obama's administration abruptly extended the deadline one year ? to Jan. 1, 2015.

That caused some Democrats in Congress to worry the program would not be ready on time, as states are building online platforms for their residents to use to comply with the law. Although the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act in June 2012, the Republican-controlled House has voted 40 times since Obama signed the law in 2010 to repeal, defund or scale it back, most recently Friday.

As Congress prepared to head home for a five-week recess, Obama sought to calm jittery Democrats, assuring them that they are "on the right side of history" despite problems with the law's launch.

Republicans have stated openly they plan to use the slow economic recovery and the health care law to attack Democrats in the 2014 congressional elections.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the governors' host and a possible 2016 Republican presidential prospect, said Obama delayed the employer mandate out of fear voters would blame Democrats in the 2014 elections if the economy suffered as a result of the new law.

"A cynic would be right to say the reason they pushed back the employer mandate had little to nothing to do with policy and everything to do with politics," Walker said.

Most of the two dozen governors from both parties gathered at the conference expressed confidence that their states would be ready on time, especially Democrats, although they said the work is daunting.

"Any time you go and make this much change in this short a period of time, it does cause headaches," Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said.

But with that pain comes progress, Hickenlooper and others argued. And those Republicans who have resisted or delayed taking action will pay the price.

Long before election day, the philosophical debate over the bill will have turned into a practical reality for millions of newly insured voters.

"Choosing ideology over jobs and affordable health care is a false choice, and it's an example of the differences between Republicans and Democrats," Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat, said.

Among the challenges states are encountering are the technological requirements to allow buyers to search for insurers, rates and benefits on the exchanges. Others are training state employees to administer the program and marketing it to millions of Americans, all during a time of strained state budgets. Marketing employees were often among the first to lose their jobs.

Despite the headaches, the alternative to the status quo is far worse, Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said.

"Nothing could be more complicated than doing what we were doing before, which was to throw away more and more money on more expensive care for worse results," said O'Malley, a Democrat also mulling a 2016 White House run.

Golf-Smile is back on Furyk's face at Firestone

AKRON, Ohio | Sat Aug 3, 2013 1:30am BST

AKRON, Ohio Aug 2 (Reuters) - It took Jim Furyk only a week to get over the agony of his late collapse at last year's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, and he had a smile on his face after once again flourishing at the elite event on Friday.

The PGA Tour veteran, in pursuit of his 17th career victory on the U.S. circuit, played "very solid" golf on the way to a two-under-par 68 in the second round, finishing in a tie for sixth at four-under 136.

"All in all a very solid day," Furyk told reporters after moving up the leaderboard with a mix of three birdies and a lone bogey on a warm, blustery day at Firestone Country Club.

"I'm still a little mad at myself for making bogey on 18, but only two bogeys today. I played very solid. Left a couple putts out there, but I also made some really good plays."

Furyk has not won on the PGA Tour since his stellar 2010 campaign when he triumphed three times, his victory at the Tour Championship earning him FedExCup honours and the $10 million bonus.

This season has been an up-and-down one for him, featuring just three top-10s in 16 starts with his best finish a tie for third at the Texas Open in April.

Though Furyk has struggled on occasion with his short game, he believes he is on the way back and was greatly encouraged by his share of ninth place at last week's Canadian Open.

"I feel like some of the work I've been doing is paying off," said the 43-year-old American, who landed his only major title at the 2003 U.S. Open. "I played well last week at Canada.

"I haven't been scoring real well this summer, so I don't feel like I've been getting a lot out of my rounds. But I feel like I did a pretty good job of that the last two days. Hopefully it carries on to the weekend."

Twelve months ago at Firestone, Furyk had led the event from the opening round until he wound up with a double-bogey on the final hole to lose the title to compatriot Keegan Bradley by one shot.

Though bitterly disappointed at the time, he said it took him no more than a week to shake off that bitter loss and focus instead on tournaments to come.

"There's no sense in really dwelling on it," said Furyk, who is known for his unorthodox, loopy swing. "I played really well last year except for the last hole, played great up until then and then made six on the last hole. It's over.

"There are events that throughout my career have bothered me, events I thought I should have won or I could have won and I wish I could have a shot back here or a shot back there.

"Guys that dwell on that sort of thing and don't get over that sort of thing end up kind of hitting road blocks in their careers, and that's just never been an issue for me." (Reporting by Mark Lamport-Stokes; Editing by Ian Ransom)

Windows 8.1 Comes with Improved Malware Resistance, Better Data Protection

Windows 8.1 was made available for download in a preview version several weeks ago, with a great deal of improvements over the previous OS version, many of which were related to the platform?s ability to keep users safe from malware and to protect their data.

This week, Microsoft provided some more info on the matter at the Black Hat 2013 conference, explaining that, with Windows 8.1, businesses could rest assured that sensitive data was kept secure even when it resided on employees? personal devices.

Some of the features that make this possible include Pervasive Device Encryption, which has been added in all editions of Windows 8.1 for devices that pack support for InstantGo, along with Selective Wipe of Corporate Data.

Not only can device encryption be automatically enabled on supporting machines, but Windows 8.1 Pro and Windows 8.1 Enterprise will also offer the full feature functionality of BitLocker, including BitLocker To Go.

Furthermore, there are additional key protectors, such as the network key protector, automatic recovery key escrow to Active Directory and more enterprise features aimed at ensuring that a physical drive won?t be compromised in the event that the device is lost or stolen.

?With Windows 8.1, we introduce Remote Data Removal which will allow an IT department to wipe corporate data (e.g. emails, attachments, corporate data that came from Work Folders) off a BYOD device without affecting personal data,? Microsoft?s Dustin Ingalls explains.

Additionally, the new platform release comes with improved built-in malware resistance measures, including an updated Windows Defender with high-performance behavior monitoring, to detect bad behaviors in memory, the registry, or the file system.

The security capabilities of Internet Explorer have been enhanced as well, thanks to an API for the browser that ?enables anti-malware solutions to make a security determination before a binary extension is loaded,? Dustin Ingalls notes.

At the same time, Internet Explorer 11 will arrive with the Enhanced Protection Mode turned on by default, which should ensure that users benefit from safer browsing.

These security improvements are meant for both end users and enterprise customers alike, Microsoft notes. All of them can be enjoyed in the newly released Windows 8.1 Preview and Windows 8.1 Enterprise Preview bits, which can be downloaded via the link below.

Dems hit GOP on immigration in top critics home

AMES, Iowa (AP) ? Kicking off an August of likely intense debate over immigration, the Senate?s second-ranking Democrat traveled to Iowa Friday to rebuke House Republicans who oppose major changes embraced by the Senate.

Sen. Richard Durbin?s strategically targeted visit was a fairly small and calm foretaste of planned demonstrations by opponents and supporters of the proposed immigration changes during Congress? summer recess. The Senate measure would heighten border security and provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of immigrants living here illegally.

Durbin, of Illinois, joined Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin at a forum in a college town represented in Congress by Republican Rep. Steve King. King is among Congress? fiercest opponents of granting citizenship to immigrants now here illegally. Republican leaders have denounced King?s most inflammatory remarks, but some Democrats depict him as a symbol of widespread GOP resistance.

Harkin said Iowans ?are compassionate, caring people and we don?t characterize people with hateful, spiteful, degrading language.?

King said in a July interview that some Hispanics brought to the country illegally as children become high school valedictorians. But for each of those, he said, ?there?s another 100 out there who weigh 130 pounds, and they?ve got calves the size of cantaloupes because they?re hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert.?

Durbin focused on the so-called DREAM Act, which would offer eventual citizenship to some immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children.

?If we can fix this immigration system, we can build the American economy and we can do the right thing,? Durbin told the Ames gathering. ?To suggest these are petty criminals or drug smugglers just doesn?t square with the reality of the DREAM Act.?

The forum featured potential DREAM Act beneficiaries.

Hector Salamanca, 20, came from Mexico as a child with his parents, who stayed in the United States after their tourist visas expired. His undocumented status made him ineligible to attend a state university or receive government-sponsored grants or loans, he told the audience of about 200.

Salamanca said he earned an associate degree at a community college and will attend Drake University. He said he tells Hispanic youths, ?Don?t let your undocumented status prevent you from achieving your goals.?

Some House Republicans have expressed interest in a version of the DREAM Act, although King calls it ?backdoor amnesty.?

The Obama administration and many activist groups have said they will not settle for the DREAM Act alone. They are pressing the GOP-controlled House to embrace something similar to the Senate bill.

Many House Republicans resist the idea. They point to GOP primary voters in their districts who oppose ?amnesty? for people here illegally, and who say a Democratic administration can?t be trusted to keep promises to tighten the border with Mexico.

Durbin noted that President Barack Obama won re-election with strong backing from Hispanic and Asian-American voters. Many Republican strategists say their party must improve its relationship with these groups, and backing broad immigration changes could help.

?If Republicans in the House don?t respond honestly and in a comprehensive way, this will continue to overshadow any other political issue among certain groups of Americans,? Durbin said.

Opponents of the Senate bill say they will use the August recess to stiffen House resistance. About 100 individuals and groups, led by the Tea Party Patriots, sent a letter this week to all House members expressing opposition to any legislation ?that bears any resemblance to ... the Senate amnesty bill.?

Meanwhile the pro-immigration-reform group America?s Voice said its activists ?are on the move with hundreds of grassroots events planned from coast to coast? this summer.

Demonstrators, who support legalization for millions now here illegally, blocked a major street outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, and some were arrested.

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said such protesters do their cause more harm than good.

?People just see it as a campaign,? Nunes said in an interview Friday. ?People get their feet set in cement when they see campaigns going on.?

King, meanwhile, said he was mourning the death of a Vietnam War hero on Friday rather than responding to Durbin?s and Harkin?s visit to his district.

Family Home and Life: Say It Saturday

Hello SIS'ters! Welcome once again to Say It Saturday. School started this week for some of the grand kids, in 2 weeks for the others. Can you believe it?! It always feels like summer is nearly over once school starts but the reality here in the Phoenix valley is that it will be hot for a loooong time still; right up and into October. And even then, it is still pretty bad outside. Why am I going on about this so much?

Well, I guess it's because I feel like I have been on a kind of marathon with all the grand kids here this summer. It has taken it's toll on me for sure along with the heat. I feel like I am crawling to the finish line and just made it in the nick of time. I am Whooped with a capital W! School starting gives me a bit of a break in one way cause it's quieter here during the day, but I will be picking kids up from school this year which means packing up and buckling in the three 2 years olds and that is a job?in it's self!?Yes I have been a little MIA in blog land but once I can get my breath you will see/hear a little more from me :)?

I really must plan for next summer because I was behind all the time this summer. I didn't do half the things I wanted to with the kids. Yes I always have bigger dreams than can come to pass but I could have done a better job with more planning.
It's fun to watch the kids grow and change over the years and how?their?play time changes. This summer fort building and playing with dolls and stuffed toys was about all they wanted to do. They would arrive, begin to build a fort for themselves, gather the dolls and toy animals then start the role playing. They would gather all the blankets and sheets they could find and one day after coming out of the bathroom I found my bed stripped down to the bare mattress! It happened in minutes! I drew the line there and asked for no more using my bed linens from my bed.

Once, one of the girls was a vet and another of the girls had brought her a stuffed dog that needed surgery. The 'vet' came out of the 'surgery' room with out the dog. The dog 'owner' was concerned?because?her dog was left alone. The 'vet' said "oh no, it's not alone, the other vets are taking care of it right now." She was pretending she had colleagues in her practice. The dog 'owner' was upset and said "You can't pretend you have other vets in there! My doggie is all alone!" So apparently while?pretending,? don't pretend! this is serious stuff! I will miss my big kids that are in school this year.

Has school started for your grand kids yet? I'm so glad you are here, thanks for coming!

The Best And Worst Beat Reporters In Baseball: NL West

Welcome back to Deadspin's Beat-Off, a crowd-sourced effort to determine the best and worst reporters covering Major League Baseball teams. This week, we've covered the NL East and NL Central. Today we'll finish off the senior circuit with the NL West.

We've organized the threads by team. Jump in the discussion down below and tell us why your favorite/least-favorite reporter is the best/worst. If you can, try to reply in your team's thread (it helps keep things organized!). And don't just give us the name of a reporter. Explain your answer, ideally without saying something stupid about "bias." For some examples, check out this conversation about the Nationals (Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post is basically a God, and the Nats' MLB.com reporter is apparently, well, not) or this one about the Cubs. Ian Desmond read your comments aloud in the Washington clubhouse. All players for all 30 teams are encouraged to do the same.

Again: The lists below are not necessarily exhaustive; the names are there to get the discussion rolling. If we missed someone, let us know in the comments.

NL West: [Dodgers] [Giants] [Diamondbacks] [Rockies] [Padres]

NL Central: [Cubs] [Cards] [Reds] [Pirates] [Brewers]

NL East: [Mets] [Braves] [Phillies] [Nats] [Marlins]

Iran's Rouhani: Occupation of Palestine is 'wound'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's president-elect called Israel's control of Jerusalem and Palestinian lands a "wound" for the Islamic world in relatively moderate remarks Friday that contrasted with the harsh rhetoric of his predecessor and other Iranian leaders.

Speaking to reporters during an annual pro-Palestinian rally, Hasan Rouhani said: "In our region and under occupation of Palestine and dear Jerusalem, there has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world."

The comments, two days before Rouhani's inauguration, were tame compared with those frequently made by outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling for Israel's destruction. The country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, once called the Jewish state a "cancer" that needed to be cut away.

A semiofficial Iranian news agency initially quoted Rouhani as calling Israel a "wound that should be removed." That prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to retort that "the real face of Rouhani has been exposed earlier than expected."

But the news agency, ISNA, later said it was a misquote, confirmed by state TV footage of Rouhani's comment reviewed by The Associated Press. Netanyahu issued no statement on the corrected version.

Nevertheless, the mishap underscored the challenges facing the incoming president, who was elected in June with pledges to seek a calmer and more balanced outreach to the West.

It is Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guard who control Iranian policies, and the supreme leader has final say in all key matters.

Rouhani will effectively be the international face of Iran and has made no secret of his desire to project a new image of dialogue rather than diatribes. It remains to be seen to what extent he will be able to persuade the ruling clerics and military that interaction with Washington and its allies over Iran's nuclear program could bring dividends such as easing painful sanctions.

Israel has not ruled out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities, which the West suspects are geared toward making a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies the charge and insists its nuclear program is meant for peaceful purposes only.

The Iranian leadership has long maintained harsh views on Israel, backing anti-Israeli factions such as Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group. But it now appears to recognize that Ahmadinejad's fiery denunciations of Israel and his questioning the extent of the Holocaust needlessly outraged the West and did not advance Iran's national interests.

Rouhani appears to be trying to maneuver in the tight space allotted in Iran's power structure. He is making clear that he stands with Iran's uncompromising positions on Israel but is also backing away from Ahmadinejad's fist-waving approach.

In his remarks Friday, Rouhani also expressed doubts about the possibility of an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal as the two sides resumed negotiations in Washington this week following a five-year freeze in Mideast talks.

"Israelis show a compromising face to the world but continue their expansionism in practice," Rouhani said, according to Fars, another semiofficial news agency. "This rally is a reminder that Muslim people will not forget their historical right and they will resist oppression and invasion."

Iran does not recognize Israel and has since the 1979 Islamic Revolution observed the last Friday of the Islamic month of Ramadan as "Al-Quds Day." Tehran says the occasion is meant to express support for Palestinians and emphasize the importance of Jerusalem for Muslims.

Jerusalem's eastern sector houses sensitive Jewish, Christian and Muslim shrines and is sacred to all three religions. Jerusalem is the holiest place in Judaism and the third holiest city in Islam, after the Saudi Arabian cities of Mecca and Medina.

Anti-Israeli rallies were held in cities and towns across Iran on Friday. In the capital, Tehran, tens of thousands took to the streets, chanting "Down with America" and "Death to Israel." Some protesters also burned American and Israeli flags.

Ahmadinejad spoke to the crowds after the rally in Friday prayers at the Tehran University campus. It was his last public speech before his term ends.

"You Zionists planted a wind but you will harvest a storm," the outgoing president said. "A destructive storm is on the way and it will destroy Zionism."

Lawsuit brought by Shakira's ex dismissed

Shakira.

A Los Angeles Superior Court has shot down a lawsuit filed against "Voice" coach Shakira that had been brought by her former boyfriend Antonio de la Rua.

Shakira's ex has filed multiple lawsuits against her, hoping to establish a claim on her income; thus far none have moved forward.

A statement from Shakira was sent to the press by her reps, and read: "I am very grateful that the courts are not allowing these groundless lawsuits to proceed. I have moved on in my life and could not be happier now. I hope this harassment will now come to an end."

According to court documents, a lawsuit filed on April 12 involved a $100 million claim, in which De la Rua said he was behind her hits, including "Hips Don't Lie." This was on top of his $250 million lawsuit filed against her in New York last November.

The singer's lawyers had asked to dismiss the cases because California was an "improper forum" to hear the dispute, which involved Colombian (Shakira) and Argentine (De la Rua) citizens. The pair signed a prenuptial agreement for unmarried couples in 2006 and in that agreed that De la Rua would be unable to claim rights to her future income.?

A second court in Geneva issued a ruling early in July against De la Rua, indicating that the prenup "decisively" concluded that they were never partnered legally.

"In a fifteen page well-reasoned opinion the Swiss court dismissed all of Mr. de la Ra's claims that he was entitled to any participation in Shakira's past, current or future business, brand or assets, including future income," the singer's attorney, Ezequiel Camerini, told E! News?at the time.

Windows HAL event 12: platform firmware memory corruption

I get the following message sometimes when waking up the computer:

"The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system."

Any idea if Asus is aware of this and if there's a new firmware on the way? I did upgrade to the latest firmware on Asus's support site, but it didn't help.

My computer has following configuration: G750JX, SSD+HDD, 32GB RAM, GTX 770M 3GB.

So far, I've experienced only one system freeze due to this memory corruption.

Larry Allen among NFL's best -- and brightest

OXNARD, Calif -- We?ve all heard stories about Larry Allen's strength, power and the raw athleticism that made him one of the best offensive linemen ever.

We can all recite the stories about him bench-pressing 700 pounds and chasing New Orleans linebacker Darion Connor 50 yards to prevent a touchdown as a rookie.

And we?ve all seen video of him destroying linebackers and defensive backs when he pulled, creating running lanes for Emmitt Smith.

?Across the board, he was the best football player I ever played with -- and I played with them all,? former Cowboys safety Darren Woodson said. ?Troy (Aikman), Emmitt, Michael (Irvin), Deion (Sanders) ... Larry Allen was the best.

?He was also the smartest.?

Say what?

That?s right, talk to any player or coach who played with Allen during his 12 seasons in Dallas and they?ll tell you he was among the game?s most intelligent players.

Former offensive line coach Hudson Houck used to joke that Allen was the best offensive linemen on the field and in the classroom.

?He wanted to know everyone?s assignment,? six-time Pro Bowl guard Nate Newton said. ?If the quarterback was rolling out, he wanted to know exactly where he was supposed to end up so he could adjust his block properly.

?He always asked a lot of questions, but he asked a lot of smart questions. He always wanted to know what we were supposed to do if the defensive player didn?t do what we thought he would do.?

Allen, a second-round pick from tiny Division II Sonoma State, was a second-round pick in the 1994 draft. Six games into the season, he was starting. The six-time All-Pro played every position except center on the offensive line.

?Do you know how smart you have to be to go from playing at Sonoma State to starting for a two-time Super Bowl champion?? Woodson said. ?Think about how big that jump is. Think about the kind of offense we had in Dallas and what he ran at Sonoma State.

?I don?t know how Larry did in math or what kind of grades he made, but he understood everything about football and concepts and that?s what helped make him a great player. He anticipated things because he knew where everyone was on the field and he could adjust.?

Cory Monteith's Glee Character Finn Will Be Written Off Show | Cory ...

Cory Monteith?s tragic passing last month left fans of Glee wondering what would happen to his beloved character Finn when the new season begins this fall.

?The third episode will write Finn out of the show,? Fox?s Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly said during the TCA tour for the network (via ET). ?That episode will deal directly with the incidents involved with Cory?s passing and the drug abuse in particular.?

?Ryan [Murphy] will shoot some PSA?s with the cast, who will speak directly to the audience,? he added.

All the proceeds from the music in that episode will go to forming a foundation in Cory?s memory.

Curtain up on New Chinese Animated Film

Princess Gaga in Bunta (2013) poster (courtesy of Zhejiang Versatile Media)

?Nothing is impossible? is the catchphrase of the 3D animated feature Bunta (2013) (Chinese Pinyin: Kunta) that opens in theatres throughout China today.

The making of the movie has been a remarkable journey undertaken by Zhejiang Versatile Media for the past three years, mimicking the story it tells:

A young boy named Boca lives on a faraway planet the size of a peanut. He sets his mind to find the titular plant, which by legend can save his people from an impending food crisis. Nobody except the babbling Neepop takes him seriously. The two sally forth with high hopes, befriending a princess who joins their cause after winning a battle with a super villain.

Director ?Leo? Lian Li, also President of Zhejiang Versatile Media, describes the tension between him and his team at the beginning of the project as ?an arm-wrestling game with 200 people.? When he called on them to make a Hollywood-caliber 3D movie, very few thought that they had the ability to.

The team?s uncertainty dissipated only seven months later when they were shown the first fully rendered demo reel. The beautiful, detailed, and pin-sharp graphics (see ?Bunta (2013) Chinese Trailer? on YouTube and Vimeo) dazzled everyone.

In fact, that was the day that Leo?s team finally united behind his vision of a world-class picture. The move enabled the company to weather the storm of 2012, when 85% of domestic animation companies, according to Southern Metropolis Daily, suffered losses because broadcasters were increasingly reluctant to air low-quality works, even for free.

3D animated features are expensive to make and market. The famous ones by Hollywood in the most recent years such as Kungfu Panda (2008), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Brave (2012) often had runaway budgets of $130 to $200 million.

Several sources state that Bunta has cost roughly RMB100 million, which is a fraction of the Hollywood budget for the same category of film, but a number unimaginable for a majority of startup studios in China. According to the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television?s estimates, the annual animation budget of Chinese broadcasters currently totals only RMB50 million, which is 60% of the Chinese animation industry?s revenue.

Having worked in advertising for 20 years, Leo?s ties are far and wide. He secured enough capital to start the production as planned, and he garnered other kinds of support. In particular, his long-time friends Wakin Chau and Jonathan Lee volunteered to write the Chinese theme song for the movie. Both men are popular icons and household names in China.

There were other hurdles. To overcome the synchronization issue between physical and virtual cameras, Versatile Media developed a proprietary technology called Kmoke 9-axis Automated Frame-by-Frame Sync Tool, which gives physical camera movements micrometer-precision.

Scale models were used to create certain scenes that were then shot with miniature effects. This was the fun part for Leo because prior to founding Versatile Media in 1993, he had spent six years as a professional model-ship builder, representing China in international competitions, Sina News Taiwan reports.

Dramatically reducing the amount of time needed to render the final feature film, 6,700 computers running on Alibaba Group?s Aliyun OS were pooled to perform the task. It is estimated that every frame in the climatic fighting scene required seven hours of frenzy calculations.

Since 2010, the year that the project got off the ground, Leo has been keen on capturing an audience beyond China. To do so, he insisted on creating universal characters that were not in any way culturally specific. He went to the Cannes Film Festival for three consecutive years to talk with buyers and distributors, whose feedback was then carefully considered and incorporated in the movie.

It was there that Leo met Tim Werenko from DuArt Film and Video, a time-honored film and recording studio in New York City founded in 1922. DuArt was given the task of adapting the movie for an American (read international) audience by rewriting the dialogue, recording new voices, composing new music, and adding all sound design and effects.

The project drew talents that happily surprised Leo, among them was ?The X Factor? runner-up, teenage songstress Carly Rose Sonenclar, who gave her voice to the English theme song of the movie.

All of these are exciting highlights of the movie, but so far, it has yet to attract any major Hollywood studios as potential distributors.

As other major Chinese animation studios have learned in the past few years, the industry?s collective weakness in branding and marketing is preventing good animated works in China from entering the international arena (The Diplomat).

Inside China is a different story. The core audience of Bunta, children aged six to 14 and their families, have been well primed for the release.

Versatile Media rolled out its social networking site Hezi World in 2009. A web-based community familiar with Hezi?s products had been built before the company launched the movie project. By May 2013, Hezi had had 40 million registered users, frequenting the website to play computer games, watch animated series, listen to a web radio designed for young mothers and children, and use a voice-supported Twitter-like service for children who could not yet type.

When Leo was visiting DuArt in April, he mentioned that he first came to the U.S. in 1996 as a guest to the 23rd International Conference on Computer Graphics and Interactive Design also known as SIGGRAPH 96. He described how backward China compared to the U.S. at that point, all the while being unable to understand a single English word.

Today, as he commented, was no yesterday. His company is equipped with some of the same hardware and software?as American animation studios are. Producing equally impactful visuals as Hollywood?s is becoming increasingly possible.

However, he also noted, there were still things that his company could not do, and he hired DuArt for exactly this reason.

Bunta (2013) is the first movie of the Bunta Trilogy that Leo plans to make. The characters in it ? Boca, Neepop, and Princess Gaga ? will almost certainly stay with a generation of Chinese children growing up. For now, it is a work in progress; if all goes well, it will be a legend unveiling right before our eyes.

Despite 25-1 odds, Leafs planning Stanley Cup parade

The Bodog betting website has listed the Toronto Maple Leafs at 25-1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup in 2014, but Time Leiweke, the new president of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, is obviously an optimistic man.?Leiweke made headlines recently when he said he has already planned out Toronto?s Stanley Cup parade route.

Leiweke also ordered that photos of the former Leafs greats be taken down at the Air Canada Centre so that the team that hasn?t won the Cup since 1967 could focus on the future instead of the past.

All this prompted?Stu Hackel of SI.com to write: ?In one sense, none of these things, nor the attention they?ve gotten, is surprising. No team in hockey commands more notice than the Maple Leafs for accomplishing little or nothing. Put this same team with the same record of missteps and mediocrity during the last decade in, oh, let?s say, Atlanta, and so few people would care that there would be little sense in keeping the franchise in Georgia.?

Wrote Cathal Kelly of the Toronto Star: ?This is the first lesson of Tim Leiweke. He has come to Toronto to win things. More importantly, he has come here to write himself into history.?

Wrote Dave Feschuk of the Toronto Star: ?So this is the new reality of Leiweke?s reign as CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. No matter that long-suffering fans of the blue and white wallow in the emotional angst of a circa-1967 Stanley Cup drought. Leiweke, for his part, is acting as though the history of the franchise began the moment he took over his gig on June 30.?

As always, it should be fun to watch the Leafs saga next season.

Making enterprise video solutions more profitable through better ...

Creating rich multimedia content allows businesses to experience a wide array of capabilities in terms of communicating with employees, clients, partners and consumers. There are a number of options available for boosting the signal on what companies have to say, providing more insight and clarity to the messages that entities want to share. Increasingly chief among these methods is enterprise video solutions, assets that allow for easy creation, curation and deployment of recorded content.

Bigger audiences with more connections
Video tools make business messages available to corporate audiences whenever they need them. The expiration dates on these recordings is limited only to the scope of the content contained in these recordings, making information more viable than written data and providing a more engaging experience?for viewers than traditional modes of communication. These assets open the door for organizations to create a long-standing resource of training, coaching, report and engagement videos that can be used time and again for a wide array of business purposes.

The question that many companies ask regarding these assets is how to increase their monetary value. While internal use can certainly be calculated and evaluated, weighing initial investment in video products versus the performance improvements evidenced in recipients, the total financial worth of these tools and services may become more abstract as audiences expand. Controlling costs on deployments and curation can also add extra variables that can throw off corporate calculations when determining the real value of hosting streaming video content. When organizations can't see the true worth of products, it can endanger ongoing funding and use of these assets. There are other ways of expanding use and boosting revenue based on video resources, though, if companies are conscious of them and implement them properly.

Improving delivery options
Making better use of online assets and sharing capabilities are among the best ways of getting more mileage out of enterprise video solutions. As Fierce Content Management stated, social networks and Internet search tools are powerful methods of putting business recordings within reach of target audiences. Whether these assets are meant to be shared with other businesses or given to investors, clients and partners determines the kinds of networks that owning entities want to utilize, but it's important that firms boost the signal on their hosted video content so that enough people see the message to make it financially viable.

These services aren't expensive, either, as the source wrote. Many social network sites and video hosting providers offer these services for free and attract huge viewing audiences each year. More importantly, these outlets allow viewers to share the videos they prefer with their own circles of friends, colleagues and social networks. Simply placing a corporate video communication resource on a site and making it easy to find increases the likelihood that the recording will then be passed along to other people that the owning organization may never have considered part of their viewing audience. This system works similarly to word-of-mouth consumer recommendations. This method can create more business leads than simply pitching videos at potential partners or corporate entities, allowing companies to gain an advantage of competitors and become recognized by peers and associates alike without spending any more money on their initial video launches.

Changing request methods
A recent study by Ovum showed that there are other methods for increasing the visibility and financial usefulness of enterprise video solutions than just putting them into more social and hosting circles than basic portal launches. Streaming Media Online reported that the survey showed that streaming content and multi-screen outlets are also helping to improve notoriety of corporate recordings. These qualities make messages easier to view, no matter where or when a person access them.

The source stated that traditional video content is far more popular when made available to people on a number of different devices. Desktop computers have long been considered the primary realm of video viewing, but as cloud resources and mobile deployments becoming increasingly popular in the corporate sphere, it's important that organizations keep up with these trends. Ovum's research showed that people are increasingly turning to Internet resources on smartphones, tablets and laptops and the valuation for these more flexible options continues to rise. In other words, people are more willing to pay a slight up-charge for a video if it's available in their desired platform.

Fierce Content Management agreed with this point, adding that people are turning aware?from televisions more these days and directing their casual and corporate viewing toward portable devices. Businesses need to ensure that they're making proper use of multi-screen technology and putting their video communication assets in social positions that allow the greatest amount of visibility in order to experience the best return on investment.

Aerial pictures reveal climate change

[unable to retrieve full-text content]As a result of climate change, certain undesirable aquatic plants are starting to invade German water bodies. Even popular recreation areas like Lake Starnberg have been affected, leading to a growing need to monitor the spread of these plants. Up to now, regular monitoring has proven to be a costly process. But in a new approach, researchers have developed a quicker and less expensive method.

(AP) ? The decision by Comcast Corp., the country's largest cable company, to buy General Electric out of the NBCUniversal business looks like a smart one, as the media conglomerate posted strong results for the second quarter.

It was the first quarter in which Philadelphia-based Comcast owned all of NBCUniversal, the parent of the NBC broadcast network and Universal Studios. Comcast bought control of NBCUniversal in 2011, with an agreement to buy the remaining GE stake over time. It sped up the schedule this year, buying out GE on March 28 for $16.7 billion.

NBCUniversal's results are more volatile than Comcast's slow-and-steady cable business. In the second quarter, it posted a 9 percent increase in revenue to $6 billion, well above analyst estimates at $5.75 billion, as polled by FactSet. Results were driven by the release of "Fast & Furious 6" and "Despicable Me 2" in theaters, and by ad sales for top-rated broadcast TV show "The Voice."

Coupled with continued strong performance in the Comcast cable business, NBCUniversal helped push overall results beyond Wall Street expectations.

Comcast earned $1.73 billion, or 73 cents per share, in the April to June period. That's up from $1.35 billion, or 50 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Overall revenue rose 7 percent to $16.3 billion from $15.2 billion.

Analysts had expected earnings of 63 cents per share on revenue of $16 billion.

Comcast shares rose $1.51, or 3.5 percent, to $44.22 in premarket trading.

Subscriber trends in the cable business were the best in five years for the seasonally weak second quarter. Cable companies routinely lose subscribers every quarter to satellite and phone-company TV services, but Comcast has been slowing down its losses, and saw a net of only 159,000 subscribers depart in the quarter.

On the broadband side, it added a net 187,000 subscribers in the quarter, the highest figure since 2008. Other Internet service providers are seeing drastically slowing recruitment, since most homes already have broadband.

Comcast is already the country's biggest Internet service provider, with nearly 20 million accounts
