CRICKET

The community of Mt Grace will be the first venue to host the 2013 Tobago Cricket Coaching Caravan. Interested persons from Mt Grace and environs are invited join the session which starts at 1pm at the Recreation Ground. Former national under-13 coach John Pollard is spearheading the Caravan which is a collaborative effort between the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board and the Tobago Cricket Association. The Caravan will be held at five centres in Tobago, and will provide coaching for boys and girls between the ages of 7-19 years. The Programme was launched by the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president Assim Bassarath in February. Back then, Bassarath said that there is a lack of organised coaching for children on the Northside from Mt Grace to L?Anse Fourmi based on information he received from the Tobago Cricket Association and these areas will be targeted in the programme. The five centres will be manned by four certified coaches per centre and the participants will be exposed to the basic fundamentals of the game for six sessions.
?????Former West Indies captain Brian Lara says his decision in the past to select Darren Sammy as a member of the West Indies team was based more on the player?s passion for the game and his dependability than cricketing ability. Lara has revealed that Sammy was one of the last two players he decided to select in a 14-man squad after ignoring suggestions to pick two other players who he claimed were ill disciplined. Lara stated: ?We were going to play in a tournament in England and we had 14 players to pick and after 12, the two players they were asking for I didn?t want on the team, because they weren?t going to play, but I knew they were going to be very destructive.? Lara was responding to questions from young participants at Monday?s start of a four-day symposium at the Cascadia Hotel and Conference Centre in Port of Spain.

?????The West Indies Cricket Board has brushed aside media reports suggesting that Pakistan?s tour of the Caribbean this year is in jeopardy. A WICB statement released ON Monday says the board remains optimistic that the tour will take place in July as planned and says negotiations are still being held to finalise plans. A report on CRICINFO said the tour is unlikely to take place after the WICB and the Pakistan Cricket Board failed to find a new window. According to the Future Tours Programme, West Indies was scheduled to host Pakistan from the last week in June to the last week in July, but a tri-series involving India, Sri Lanka and West Indies has since been planned. Pakistan was originally scheduled to play two Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s. To avoid a clash, the WICB is reported to have asked the Pakistan Cricket Board to reschedule its tour to August, but this change would have interfered with Pakistan?s own plan to host India and to play out the Zimbabwe series that was postponed last year. Also, the inaugural Caribbean Premier League is scheduled to take place from July 29 to August 26.

Phoenix Masters were the only team to win in open play yesterday (April 9) in the Edward Henry Construction Co Over 40 League. Masters, who are on course to defend their double crown having already won the league competition, got the better of Roxborough Rebels 2-nil in the first of a double header at the Canaan/Bon Accord Recreation Ground. Leslie Bristol and Sherneal McMillan were the players on target for the winners. Meantime, Lambeau Legends and Moriah Jammers played to another entertaining 2-all draw in the later game. Winston Grant and Brian Daniel scored for Lambeau, while Steve Paul and Burrell Patterson replied for Moriah. It was the 2nd time both teams faced off against each other as the first encounter could not have been completed because of the unavailability of lights at the Dwight Yorke Stadium Training Ground. As in the first clash, the game ended in a stalemate, only this time they had lights to complete the penalty shoot-out. However, for unexplained reasons, Moriah refused to participate in the penalty shoot-out to decide the winner. As a result, the organizers advanced Lambeau who will meet Phoenix Masters tomorrow (April 11) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium Training Ground. The winner of tomorrow?s game will meet Old Magic?s in Monday?s (April 15) final. Old Magic?s were held a 1-all draw by Bethel Old Boys but were good enough to secure passage to the final courtesy a 5-4 win with kicks from the penalty spot. David Thomas?s item for Magic was cancelled out by Mervyn Kerr for Bethel.
?????.Borussia Dortmund completed a dramatic comeback yesterday by scoring twice in stoppage time to defeat Malaga 3-2 and advance to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 15 years. Real Madrid, meanwhile, also reached the semi-finals for the third straight season despite losing 2-3 at Galatasaray following a second-half resurgence by the Turkish team. Madrid needed a double from Cristiano Ronaldo to advance 5-3 on aggregate, but only after conceding three goals in a 16-minute span to raise Galatasaray?s hopes of pulling off what would have been a remarkable comeback. Trailing 2-1 as three minutes of added time began, Dortmund equalised through Marco Reus, but Malaga still held the away goals advantage.
