NEW YORK (AP) ? Sonia Sotomayor traded benches for a day, joining the New York Yankees' Bleacher Creatures.

The Supreme Court justice attended the Yankees' 12-3 win over Baltimore on Wednesday and sat in Section 203 of the right-field stands for the first-inning "Roll Call" of New York's starting lineup.

"Having sat in the old stadium bleachers, anonymously, there is quite a chord that gets touched when you come back on a day like today and people are screaming out 'Justice' or 'Sonia,' and it brings a little bit of a tear to your eye," she said during the seventh inning. "My life has changed so much, and you have a new Yankee Stadium, but the spirit of the Yankees is still in the house, and it was very moving for me and important to me that the comfort that they gave me most of my life in watching them most of the time win continues."

Usually seen on the Supreme Court bench in robes next to Stephen Breyer, she wore a black top and blue jeans and sat next to "Bald Vinny" Milano in a section where tickets cost $20 and $23. The Yankees said she moved to better seats after Roll Call.

"The first thing I said to her was, 'I'm probably going to be the loudest guy you meet today, but I'm absolutely speechless,'" Milano related. "I don't think she knew before she got here what she was in for."

Sworn in as an associate justice in August 2009, Sotomayor threw out the ceremonial first pitch for a game against Boston at new Yankee Stadium that Sept. 26. She attended the Yankees' game at the Washington Nationals on June 15 and was invited to sit with the Bleacher Creatures by director of communications and media relations Jason Zillo.

She gave the fans a positive judgment.

"You could tell I'm a shrill of a fan," she said. "I pay homage to the Bleacher Creatures. They are the greatest fans. To sit in sweltering heat when the sun is blazing, to sit out there in the rain, to sit out there on days when we're losing and not to take it out on our players takes heart, and they show it every game, every time they come out, and so I felt very proud to be with them."

In 1995 as a U.S. district judge, she issued an injunction that led to the end of a 7?-month strike by the baseball players' union. She doesn't consider herself to be the biggest baseball fan on the Supreme Court.

"Justice (Antonin) Scalia is fond of reminding me that he was the first Yankee fan on the court, and that he is still a very loyal Yankee fan," she said. "I keep telling him the only difference is I was born in the Bronx and he wasn't."

Asked about her greatest Yankee Stadium moment, she responded with a Yankees moment that occurred at Boston's Fenway Park while she was attending Yale Law School.

"The '78 Bucky Dent home run in that season-ending game against the Red Sox," she said. "I was in law school, made a bet with my dearest friends in law school, and Bucky hit that home run and all the guys in the room lost the bet."

Milano, who lives in Bellmore, N.Y., gave her a Creatures lapel pin membership badge, which she said she will pass along to a nephew who collects her mementos in a scrap book.

"You never know," Milano said with a laugh. "She's not a bad friend to have."

Genetic copy-number variants and cancer risk

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Genetics clearly plays a role in cancer development and progression, but the reason that a certain mutation leads to one cancer and not another is less clear. Furthermore, no links have been found between any cancer and a type of genetic change called "copy-number variants," or CNVs. Now, a new study published by Cell Press in The American Journal of Human Genetics on August 2 identifies CNVs associated with testicular cancer risk, but not with the risk of breast or colon cancer.

Some cancers, including breast and colon cancer, are caused by mutations that are passed from one generation to the next. However, most cancers, including testicular cancer, are sporadic -- they arise without a family history of cancer. Many of these sporadic cancers result from genetic mutations in germ cells -- the cells involved in reproduction -- even though neither parent has the mutation. Scientists call these "de novo" mutations.

In order to identify rare de novo mutations associated with cancer risk, Dr. Kenneth Offit and colleagues searched for CNVs, which are duplications or deletions of one or more sections of DNA, in cancer patients and their cancer-free relatives. They found a significant increase in the number of rare de novo CNVs in individuals with testicular cancer as opposed to breast or colon cancer. Although such CNVs have been associated with autism and other neurocognitive and cardiovascular disorders, they were not previously known to be associated with cancer.

The authors propose that de novo changes (as opposed to those inherited from parents) might be indicative of conditions that have traditionally resulted in reduced fertility. Although modern treatment regimens allow more than 90% of men with testicular cancer to live long and reproductive lives, the condition traditionally left affected men childless. "We speculate that the paradigm of a de novo germline disease etiology may be less applicable to late-onset cancers," says Offit, "in part explaining the lower frequency of de novo events we found in adult-onset breast and colon cancer cases." Pinpointing the specific genetic changes that lead to cancer development will improve the understanding of the origins of cancer, leading to new treatment strategies and ultimately easing the burden on those afflicted with these diseases.

Black Woman Blogging: Big Mama's Dead, So Get Your Shit Together

Most of us black folks who came of age in the '60's and '70's grew up with at least one matriarchal figure in the family who held things together and held up the triflin' folks in the family.? This matriarch was usually older, someone who always kept a roof over her head, paid her bills, and always had a meal available for anyone who crossed her threshold.? She always seemed to be able to dig down in her bra and find a twenty for someone to "hold," knowing full well she'd probably never get it back.? She'd co-sign for some young'un in the family trying to get a car or some furniture and wouldn't think twice about mortgaging her house to get her?child or grandchild out on bail.?She was the kind of woman who maybe worked a menial job, cooked up a storm on Saturday night for family card games, and pulled herself together for Sunday school and making a huge Sunday dinner.? She was Big Mama.? And if there were an Olympic sport for putting everyone else first and ignoring your own health, the Big Mamas would have medaled for sure.? They were overweight, ate a fat-laden diet, were often hypertensive or diabetic, and oftentimes smoked like chimneys.

Well, I've got news for the generations of black folks behind me.? Big Mama's dead, so?get your shit together.

Anyone in the generations behind me looking for that same kind of black matriarch to fill the shoes of the Big Mamas before her is destined to be disappointed.? No one wants the role.? I know I don't.

Times have changed, and nobody, least of all elderly black women,?can afford to carry any other grown-ass adults who make unwise decisions and end up in need because of them.? The financial setbacks that can come for co-signing for folks or mortgaging your house to help someone are far harder to overcome now than since the Great Depression.? As my late mother, SWIE (She Who Is Exalted) used to say, "Money's as tight as Dick's hat band."? As a child, I never knew who Dick was, but he and his hat band were always invoked when my mother didn't have it to give.

The Big Mamas of my childhood WERE the social safety net that government wasn't, or wasn't on time enough to be.? They were the ones who would take folks in when they lost their jobs, who'd keep a drug-addicted niece or nephew from losing their kids to the foster care system, who not only raised their kids and their grandkids, but their great-grands as well.

Black mothers today do well just to raise the children they have.? Elderly black women do well to keep a roof over their heads.? Taking on the created problems of grown-ass people who don't have their shit together is more than most black?women of any age?can handle.? And given how the Big Mamas of the past?ignored their health tending to everyone else, well, that's not a model my generation wants to emulate.

So, if you don't have your shit together -- a steady job, a roof over your head, a way to take care of your own kids and stand on your own two feet, well, don't go looking for Big Mama.? Big Mama's dead, and nobody's going to to replace her.? Nobody wants to.

What is great about owning a franchise? You get to invest in a pre-made business. It?s much like owning a business that is already successful. You agree to invest in a business that already has its own service, formulas, and specifications for operations. There is inventory, policies, procedures, and even a marketing plan potentially.

As a new business owner with potentially little experience, you may not have to worry about decorating, the layout of your business, or branding.

The franchisor will provide you with training, and may even offer you a pre-assigned location. The exterior of your business may even be complete, depending on the type of franchising opportunities you invest in. You will receive in most cases ongoing support, in exchange for an ongoing fee or percentage of the sales you make. In some cases, you may have to pay a flat base fee or rent depending on the person situation. So essentially as a franchisee you are paying someone to use their concepts, strategies and their name. You are leasing a successful business, kind of like leasing a car, to make money.

The Bad, and Ugly
