Florida is Creating Jobs
In the survey, CEOs were asked to grade states in respect to business taxes, business regulation, workforce quality and flexibility, and overall quality of life. Florida moved up a notch this year to 2nd place (from last year's 3rd place). The move is quite an achievement, considering that Florida ranked 10th as recently as 2008.?Most likely the biggest factor in Florida's favor is the great news on the employment front. Unemployment in Florida dropped 2.1% in 2011, one of the most dramatic decreases in any state, and 140,000 private-sector jobs were created here last year.
Florida is a Right to Work State
Florida and most of the other states in the "top ten" are right-to-work states, and this is not a coincidence. When businesses move to a new state (often to escape over-regulation and high taxation), workforce flexibility is one of the qualities they seek. Several noted economists (Ohio State?s Richard Vedder and Harvard?s Robert Barro) have recently found that economies grow faster in right-to-work states, and those states tend to draw more laborers from other states.?Florida has been a right-to-work state for many years, but in 2011 the state also enacted several other regulatory and tax reforms that increased Florida's ability to entice relocating businesses.?
