?Girls Night: The Musical?

Imagine the Desperate Housewives or Sex and the City gals but without the sophisticated banter and in a lower income bracket. Girls Night: The Musical provides a basic female bonding plot involving four female friends ? and a fifth who is there in ?spirit? only ? letting down their hair and enjoying ?80s music, gossip and belting out female empowerment songs at a Karaoke bar. The show is playing at Resorts? Screening Room now to Sept. 1.?

The gathering features Carol (Tina Jensen), the loud, just-shy-of-obnoxious party girl; Liza (Erin Baltzer), who is the well-to-do member of the group but unhappy with her marriage; Kate (Valerie Witherspoon), the boring designated driver; Anita (Leslie McQueen), who is fine as long as she is on her anti-anxiety meds and Sharon (Ashley Edler), a former member of the pack, who is a not-so-angelic angel thanks to an unfortunate accident as a teenager. She is the narrator, filling in the details about her friends and their lives.?

The excuse for the party involves Sharon?s daughter, Candy Rose (who was almost named Aretha Van Halen). She is getting married, but even when Candy calls to say she can?t make it, the other ladies are not about to miss an opportunity to bitch about their lives, and occasionally get bitchy with each other.?

While the plot fails to rise above some pretty standard clich?s about how women think and act when they are together dishing about their men, the music is the primary reason to see the show. It is hard not to sing along (which is absolutely encouraged) to such disco diva classics as Gloria Gaynor?s ?I Will Survive,? ?It?s Raining Men? by the Weather Girls and ?We Are Family? by Sister Sledge.?

There are moments when the show wants to get more serious, talking about painful disappointments and secrets. There are also moments when the show gets racy, including some physical comedy with an anatomically correct blow-up boyfriend that Kate gets busy with as she shatters her boring image with her outrageous behavior.?

The cast is solid, with each performer getting a chance to shine musically in the course of the evening, the ensemble seemingly having its most fun while letting us know that ?Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.??

Girls Night: The Musical is not exactly groundbreaking entertainment, but provides a great excuse to leave your spouses/boyfriends at home and gather with your female friends to join in the fun, singing and dancing with a spunky cast in a party atmosphere. ?
