2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer Awards
The regional winners of the 2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer of the Year Awards have been announced.
Sport New Zealand?s annual Award programme in partnership with Rebel Sport recognises outstanding volunteers in each region ? in the categories of Coach, Administrator and Lifetime Achievement.
Sport Canterbury presented each recipient with a certificate and sports book, recognising them at the recent Sports Executive Breakfast in Christchurch.
The judges had an unenviable task, selecting winners from nearly 200 nominations.

Neil Gow
Neil has held many roles with the Elmwood Bowling Club, including five years on the Executive Committee (two years as President) and six years as Green Superintendent (a position he still holds). He runs the winter indoor bowls and mentors new players. He was on the working party committee to form the Elmwood Club (a sporting hub encompassing six sports) and is now the Elmwood Bowling Club Board Member on that Elmwood Club.

In over 20 years as a member of Elmwood Bowling Club, Neil has selflessly dedicated hundreds of hours of his own time for the betterment of the club. With the positions he holds or has held, he is at the club every day in Summer and every second day in winter. He is known as the first to come forward for working bees, cooking on the barbecue and whatever needs to be done. He was an integral worker in local sport recovery following the Canterbury earthquakes.
Prior to taking up bowls, Neil was involved with the Lincoln University Rugby Club for over 20 years as administrator and coach, also serving over 18 years on the Canterbury Rugby Football Union Executive.
With a tremendous commitment of over 40 years to sport volunteering, there seem to be only three to four weeks each year when Neil is not fully committed to volunteering duties. Those who know him comment that more remarkably, he is ?always smiling!?

Glenn Hooper
Glenn has coached in both summer and winter sport for Catholic Cathedral College for the last 10 years. He is always willing to go the extra mile required to help out in other areas of sport at the school as well.
In 2012, he has Coached a Year 7 cricket team, a Year 9 cricket team and a senior cricket team (and we all know how much time cricket involves!). In the winter he coaches a girls? rugby team and a 2nd 11 club team.
Glenn is therefore responsible for five teams in total ? which means 12-14 hours weekly training plus three to four additional hours each Saturday.
Glenn is extremely committed almost every week throughout the year ? summer and winter alike. He is always willing to assist with more teams whenever another coach or parents put their hand up for help.
Glenn?s athletes say they really enjoy his coaching ? both the fun and the opportunity to learn from someone with so much experience.

Paula Wilkinson
Paula Wilkinson
Paula has built Pioneer Basketball Club from the very beginning. She has dedicated 12 years to the club and 25 years to Canterbury basketball, where she supported hundreds of children through skill clinics and trials.
She has worked as a volunteer, building the junior club to nearly 100 teams. She works all draws for these teams, contacting all schools and coaches, and putting in countless hours. The club is trying to employ an administrator, and Paula is working to get funds for this position.
Paula referees and coaches, as well as spending hours in front of the computer each week and for the entire season.
In 2012, Paula has Pioneer Club teams in both male and female leagues in Christchurch Club basketball ? for the first time ever!
She works tirelessly to secure grants for not only the club, but for individuals who are nominated to attend tournaments, some of which are overseas. Put simply, without Paula, there would not be a Pioneer Basketball Club.
As always, Paula thinks of others before herself, which is why Pioneer is growing from strength to strength
