MEXICO ? Selectmen on Thursday night set the 2011-12 tax rate at $25 per $1,000 valuation, up almost 9 percent from last year's $23.
They also set public hearings on proposed ordinances that would ban the use and sale of fireworks, and would put in place a six-month moratorium on the creation of any new mobile home parks.
Town Manager John Madigan said the tax rate rose because of the town's higher share of RSU 10 school taxes, and higher costs to operate the town.
Town Clerk Penny Duguay said bills to the 1,800 property owners will likely be mailed within the next two weeks. Payment of the first half of taxes is due by Oct. 26. Those paid after will be subject to a 6.5 annual interest rate. The second half of taxes is due in March.
The new tax rate will allow an overlay of $16,738, which can be used for any valuation disputes.
The board also approved a five-year lease/purchase agreement with the Gorham Leasing Group for the purchase of a new Case backhoe for $78,700. That includes the trade-in of a 15- or 16-year-old John Deere backhoe.
No penalty will be assessed if the town is able to pay in full before the end of the purchase period, Madigan said.
Using road reserve funds, the board approved purchasing a new body for the town's sander at a cost of $29,000 from H.P. Fairfield of Skowhegan.
Public hearings on a proposed fireworks ordinance and mobile home park moratorium were set for 6 p.m. Sept. 25. They will join two other public hearings previously set for the same date that will gather comments on whether all-terrain-vehicles and snowmobiles should be allowed to use Carlton Avenue to connect with the trail network, and to ban parking on the left side of Cherry Street.
