The Mighty Fit Grasshopper | Product Reviews, Health Tips, Natural Health, Fitness: Guest Post: Controlling and Treating Eczema skip to main | skip to sidebar Eczema is a condition that causes the skin to become itchy and inflamed. It is also referred to as atopic dermatitis. Eczema is frequently accompanied by other health conditions, such as hay fever and asthma. The exact causes of eczema are not known. However, irritable, dry skin and a malfunction of the immune system play a role in the development of this condition. Additionally, eczema can be worsened by emotional disorders and stress.

Eczema is frustrating to deal with, but the good news is that there are a number of treatments available that can alleviate this condition. The goal of eczema treatment is to relieve the itching, reduce inflammation and prevent future flare-ups.

Mild eczema can usually be treated and controlled with over-the-counter anti-itch creams. However, patients who have more severe eczema may need to be prescribed a medication. Doctors frequently recommend corticosteroid creams. These creams help reduce the scaling and alleviate the itching. There are some corticosteroid creams that are available over the counter, but you should always consult with a doctor before you use one of these creams.

Corticosteroids are not recommended for long-term use because they can cause unpleasant side effects, such as infections and skin discoloration. Corticosteroids are also available in the form of an oral medication or injection. These medications can cause very serious side effects, such as muscle weakness, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and cataracts.

Oral antihistamines can help alleviate the itching of eczema. These medications are available over-the-counter. Benadryl is an example of an antihistamine. Sleepiness is a side effect of oral antihistamines, which can be helpful at bedtime.

There are a number of things that you can do at home to help manage your eczema. You should try to identify and avoid the things that trigger eczema. This condition is triggered by stress, sweating and temperature changes. It can also be triggered by harsh detergents, soaps and wool products.

You may also want to consider taking a warm bath with uncooked oatmeal and baking soda. First blend the oatmeal until it is a fine powder and mix it with the baking soda. After that, run some warm bath water and sprinkle in the oatmeal mixture. You will need to soak in the oatmeal bath for 15-20 minutes.

It may be tempting to scratch the areas of your skin that have been affected by eczema. However, that is something that you should avoid doing. If you find that it is hard for you to avoid scratching, then you should cover up the itchy areas. You may also want to consider trimming your nails and wearing gloves at night. Using a cream or oil on your skin after a shower or bath is another thing that you can do to control your eczema.

Additionally, applying a cold compress to the area can be very effective. Cold compresses can protect the skin and reduce itching.
