NEW YORK (Reuters) - A young model was either insane, or a calculating, quick-thinking murderer who feigned mental illness when he killed and castrated his lover, a prominent Portuguese journalist, in their New York hotel room last year, a jury heard on Wednesday. No one disputes that Renato Seabra, 22, killed Carlos Castro, 65, in January 2011. Seabra pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to a charge of second degree murder, and his trial reached closing arguments at Manhattan criminal court. ...

Men with big beer bellies likely to have weaker bones: study

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Men with excessive fat around their abdomen, commonly known as a "beer belly," are at an elevated risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, and now researchers are adding osteoporosis to the list of potential hazards.

More than 37 million American men over age 20 are obese, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. While obesity is associated with a host of other health problems - hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, sleep apnea and joint diseases - it has been widely accepted that overweight men were at a lower risk for bone loss.

"Not true," said Dr. Miriam Bredella, a radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School. "Everyone thinks of osteoporosis as a disease of women. Studies all focused on women, and men were always thought to be fine. We specifically wanted to look at young men."

Bredella and her team of researchers evaluated 35 obese men with a mean age of 34 and a mean body mass index, a measure of body fat, of 36.5.

The men were divided into two groups: one with mainly subcutaneous fat, which lies just beneath the skin and is spread all over the body, and the other with mostly visceral or intra-abdominal fat, located deep under the muscle tissue in the abdominal cavity.

    DEEP FAT MORE DANGEROUS

Visceral fat, which is what causes the a pot belly even in thin people, is far more menacing because the fat is packed in-between the inner organs and is strongly linked to heart disease. Genetics, a high-fat diet and a sedentary lifestyle all contribute to visceral fat.

"What surprised us most was that men with visceral fat had significantly weaker bones than (the subcutaneous fat) group. These are men with the same degree of obesity and who were about the same age," Bredella said in a telephone interview.

For the study, she put the men through a computed tomography, or CT scan, of the abdomen and thigh to measure fat and muscle mass, as well as very high resolution CT of the forearm.

She assessed bone strength to predict fracture risk using a technique called finite element analysis, which is used in mechanical engineering to determine the strength of materials for the design of bridges and airplanes.

What she found was that the bones of the group with more visceral fat were nearly twice as weak as those with subcutaneous fat, or fat spread all over the body.

The results also showed that muscle mass was positively associated with bone strength.

She said the size of her study was limited by the sophistication and expense of the imaging tools that were used to predict risk. Since the results of this study, she has evaluated an additional 30 men in the same fashion, rendering the same results.

There appears to be two main reasons that visceral fat leads to osteoporosis, Bredella said. One is that all people with visceral fat secrete less human growth hormone, which plays an important role in maintaining healthy bones. The second reason is that visceral fat secretes certain molecules that cause inflammation, which in turn, weakens bones.

The secretion of these molecules and their effect on the body will be the focus of her future research.

Michigan State Loses To Miami 67-59 In ACC-Big Ten Challenge 2012

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The Michigan State Spartans have battled early season injuries, and Wednesday night's loss was part of the healing process.

With two players back from recent ailments, coach Tom Izzo wrestled with how to alter his substitution pattern, and the 13th-ranked Spartans lost 67-59 to Miami.

"That was a hard game to coach," Izzo said. "I didn't know how to approach it, and I probably didn't do a great job. It's going to get better once we get our rotation down. I still like where I think we've got a chance to go, but I sure don't like it right now."

Gary Harris returned from a shoulder sprain and scored 12 points in 25 minutes. Travis Trice was back from a concussion and had nine points in 12 minutes.

Even so, the Spartans' offense sputtered, and their point total was a season low.

"It's going to heal because we're going to get healthy," Izzo said. "There were bright spots with those two guys back."

Keith Appling had 15 points for the Spartans (5-2), who lost for the first time since the season opener against Connecticut.

Senior Trey McKinney Jones scored a career-high 18 points for the Hurricanes (4-1), who held Michigan State without a field goal for a pivotal 5 1/2-minute stretch in the second half. McKinney Jones went 5 for 7 from 3-point range, including a basket that capped a 14-2 run to start the second half that put them ahead 41-33.

The lead grew to 57-45, and they went 8 for 8 from the free throw line over the final 2:11 to seal the victory.

Miami held the ball in the final seconds to run out the clock, and students then stormed the court, hoisting at least one player and the team mascot onto their shoulders and chanting, "A-C-C." The game was part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

"I was thinking, `This is what college basketball is all about,'" coach Jim Larranaga said. "In fact, what I was really thinking was, `This is what being a college student is all about.' Your greatest memories don't come in the classroom. They come at events like this that you'll remember years down the road."

The Hurricanes' second-year coach has worked hard to boost attendance, dispatching his players to dormitories to distribute pizza and chicken wings.

But Larranaga knows winning is the best way to create a bandwagon.

"This was November's highlight," he said. "Now we need to get some December highlights."

The Spartans cut down on their turnovers ? they had 12 after totaling 20 in each of the past two games ? but they still struggled with their half-court offense. They stayed in the game only because they had 16 offensive rebounds.

"We've got to get a get a couple of guys playing harder, and we've got to get a couple of guys playing better," Izzo said.

The Spartans trailed 48-42 with 10 minutes left, then went without a basket until Branden Dawson scored to cut the deficit to 57-47 with 4:55 left.

Shane Larkin and Durand Scott scored 15 points apiece for the Hurricanes, who went 9 for 16 from 3-point range and had only nine turnovers. Reggie Johnson had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Harris had 12 points for Michigan State and Dawson added 11.

Scott penetrated easily at the outset and scored nine consecutive points to help Miami take the lead. Trice and Harris hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Spartans their biggest lead, 28-23, and they were up 31-27 at halftime.

"We took a few punches from Michigan State," Larranaga said. "We needed to fight back, and we did."

McKinney Jones hit from 3-point range for a 51-42 Miami lead, and made another 3 to beat the shot clock and make it 55-45.

"Every one of my 3s came from a pass," he said. "My teammates were just finding me in the right spot."

Scott's two free throws gave the Hurricanes their biggest lead at 57-45, and thereafter Michigan State got no closer than eight points.

"It's not the highlight of our season," Johnson said. "It was a heck of a game, but we have to continue to get better."

High Gear Media answers surging mobile audience with free ...

It?s not every content portal that can claim funding from two of the premier venture capital firms in the Valley. But?High Gear Media can do just that, having raised $12 million over multiple rounds from Accel Partners and Greylock Partners, among other investors. Earlier this week, the company that competes with Car and Driver, Road & Track, and Motor Trend launched an improved iOS mobile app that has the potential to dramatically disrupt the automotive media industry.

The traditional print incumbents in the category offer content via iOS, but do so in nearly all cases through the Newsstand and behind a paywall. Digital-only High Gear is now offering 100 percent of its content for free via a universal iPhone and iPad app. High Gear operates several Web properties including review and listing site TheCarConnection.com, green vehicle site GreenCarReports.com, and luxury and performance vehicle news destination MotorAuthority.com.

Each of these properties creates and publishes its own editorial and premium video content, as well as syndicate its content across partner sites such as Yahoo Autos, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Glam Media.?It?s the Motor Authority brand that?s getting the app treatment.

Across its entire ecosystem, the company sees more than 5 million monthly viewers and is ranked in the Top 10 by Comscore in the Automotive category. The app launch could not come at a better time for High Gear, as the company has seen mobile Web user growth of 150 percent over the last year and similarly increasing inbound consumer requests for a native app.

Showing that its audience is equally as active on social media as it is on mobile, Motor Authority recently crossed 100,000 Facebook friends amid 100 percent annual growth in that regard, while the entire High Gear ecosystem totals more than 200,000 followers on the social network.

These figures put Motor Authority on par with industry 800-pound industry gorilla Edmunds, which itself just crossed 100,000 followers, and suggests parent company High Gear is in a commanding position to address its target audience through the social channel. As social media becomes increasingly important in driving audience to digital content, this lead will become more and more valuable.

Interestingly, there?s no clear leader in the automotive?native mobile app category, with the most downloaded being Car and Driver Magazine, a paid app with approximately 164,000 downloads accodring to XYO data. High Gear could conceivable cross that threshold quite quickly given its free pricing model.

Collectively these social and mobile trends are not unique to High Gear but represent a theme across the content and commerce ecosystem. An increasing percentage of digital content is consumed on mobile devices ? 22 percent and rising ? and digital content is increasingly being used to drive commerce. As many ecommerce-first companies have found, mobile revenue is quickly catching up to mobile engagement.

High Gear CEO Matt Heist, who previously worked at Sidestep.com, and before that at Yahoo, recently discussed his observations and recommendations in a contributed post on PandoDaily. In it, he suggests blending traditional with promoted content, geo-targeting advertising, incorporating transactions into editorial content, and restructuring costs from print to mobile publishing ? the company will employ each of these strategies in one form or another within the MotorAuthority app. Like Heist, High Gear Founder and Chairman Hesky Kutscher is no digital slouch, having previously founded and ultimately sold ShopLocal to Gannett in 2004 for $75 million.

The takeaway seems to be that those media companies native to the digital realm are best equipped ??and most willing ??to adapt to its unique demands. High Gear?s decision to buck industry trends by giving away its content for free is one example of this progressive mindset. Its recent growth suggests that the initiatives are working and that those who have not yet embraced the mobile audience would be well served to adapt.

An addiction is considered something utterly destructive. In the event that it is neglected, it will simply worsen in time. The physical and psychological state of any person that abuses drugs or alcohol regularly are going to worsen. This will surely lead to several problems which are not easily addressed for example diseases. If you would like to avoid that, make an effort to immediately eradicate the addiction. Not only that, you are going to also be absolutely secure by any kind of harming diseases that may develop. Each of the drug addiction withdrawals will certainly happen eventually. Addicts have a tendency to waste their cash for the substance that they are abusing, and eventually they will likely not be able to afford the next dope. This can lead to detrimental results, sometimes even threatening for the people around them.

Addicted individuals under the effects of drugs can possibly harm others. There is nothing at all quick about this process, thus you must spend lots of time and energy in it. Nevertheless, by now, it is likely you have realized that it is the only way out. Because of that, you shouldn't think twice when it comes to solving your trouble.

A therapy center is the ideal location to deal with a problem as severe as an dependancy. Don't try to relieve the substance abuse withdrawals on your own, as you will probably fail. Your exclusive target must be to look for expert support. This is certainly something that you, as well as your loved ones need desperately. If you choose to postpone the required therapy, you are likely to only allow it to become even worse. At some time, all your family members will most likely choose to abandon you. Montana state legislator?s bill would require teaching intelligent design in public schools

If Clayton Fiscus, a new Republican member of the Montana House of Representatives, has his way, intelligent design will soon be taught alongside evolution across the state.

On Nov. 5, Fiscus requested that a bill be drafted which would require Montana public schools ?to teach intelligent design along with evolution,? according to the National Center for Science Education.

The freshman legislator?s expected bill is virtually certain to face court challenges in the event that it becomes law.

In 1987, the Supreme Court held in Edwards v. Aguillard that a Louisiana law requiring public schools to teach both creation science and evolution was unconstitutional because the law was intended to advance a specific religion.

In a 2005 case, Kitzmiller v. Dover, a federal district court in Pennsylvania ruled that the Establishment Clause prevents public schools from teaching intelligent design because it is essentially religion, not science.

The defendants in Kitzmiller v. Dover, a local school board, did not appeal the ruling. Consequently, the case had no chance to reach the Supreme Court. To date, the Supreme Court has not ruled directly on the constitutionality of teaching intelligent design in public schools.

The bill Fiscus wants drafted would not be the Montana legislature?s first foray into the continuing controversy over the teaching of evolution in schools. Most recently, in 2001, a bill was introduced that would have mandated the teaching of ?competing theories of origin? rather than ?the exclusive teaching of the theory of evolution,? notes the NCSE. That bill died in committee.

Representative-elect Clayton Fiscus is a realtor by occupation and the owner of Fiscus Realty, according to The Billings Gazette. He resides in Billings and will represent Montana House District 46 once he is sworn in.

The Montana House of Representatives reconvenes on Jan. 7, 2013.

Cameron says media regulation must change

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron said on Wednesday that MPs should make Britain's media subject to an independent system of regulation.

Speaking the day before judge Brian Leveson is due to announce his findings on British media ethics after a year-long inquiry, Cameron said the status quo needed to change but gave no indication of whether he would support statutory regulation.

"The status quo, I would argue, does not just need updating - the status quo is unacceptable and needs to change," Cameron told parliament, adding that he hoped all parties would work together to ensure independent media regulation.

The Leveson inquiry was set up by Cameron after the phone-hacking scandal at Rupert Murdoch's News of the World, a News Corp Sunday tabloid the media tycoon later shut down.

"This government set up Leveson because of unacceptable practices in parts of the media and because of a failed regulatory system," Cameron said.

"What matters most ... I believe, is that we end up with an independent regulatory system that can deliver and in which the public will have confidence."

National Lab Report Shows Cost of Solar Energy Continues Significant Decline

Washington, DC (PRWEB) November 27, 2012?The average cost of going solar in the U.S. continued to decrease significantly in 2011 and through the first half of 2012, according to a report released today by the Department of Energy?s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Solar advocates noted that these findings are the latest indicator that solar is an important and growing part of America?s new energy economy.

?This report shows just how far solar power has come in the U.S., and how much more we can do. Faced with a recession economy, messy election politics and an entrenched electricity marketplace, solar is quietly defying the odds and reinventing our national energy landscape. It?s really remarkable,? said Adam Browning, Executive Director of the Vote Solar Initiative.

?With solar energy more affordable than ever, more American families and businesses are going solar to meet their electricity and hot water needs,? said Rhone Resch, president and CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). ?Declining costs have driven record growth over the last four years and we expect the solar market to double in 2012 and double again in 2013. This growth proves that smart federal and state energy policies diversify our energy portfolio and grow our economy. With 5,600 companies employing 119,000 Americans, the U.S. solar industry has become an economic engine for America.?

The latest edition of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab?s ?Tracking the Sun,? an annual report on solar photovoltaic (PV) costs in the U.S., examined more than 150,000 PV systems installed between 1998 and 2011 and preliminary data from the first half of 2012. Key findings include:

? ? ? ? ?The average installed price of residential and commercial PV systems completed in 2011 range from $6.1/W for smaller projects to $4.9/W for larger projects, an 11-14% decrease from the year before. Installed prices fell an additional 3-7% in the first half of 2012.
? ? ? ? Historically, installed PV prices have declined an average of 5-7% per year from nearly $12/W in 1998, with particularly sharp reductions occurring since 2009.
? ? ? ? The recent price decline is, in large part, attributable to falling module prices, which fell by $2.1/W from 2008 through 2011, and have fallen further still in 2012.
? ? ? ? Non-module costs, such as installation labor, marketing, overhead, inverters, and the balance of systems for residential and commercial systems declined by roughly 30% from 1998 to 2011, but have not declined as rapidly as module prices in recent years. Market-building policies that target non-module or ?soft? costs represent a significant opportunity for continued price reduction.

?Tracking the Sun gives us more good solar news as we see efficiencies built into labor and permitting practices without sacrificing quality and safety," said Jane Weissman, executive director, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, Inc. (IREC)."The solar industry has built in safeguards through standard-based performance and competency assessment programs which together lead to consumer confidence and sustainable market growth."

The price declines found in Tracking the Sun add to a number of recent reports that illustrate:

? ? ? ? ?Rapid Market Growth: PV installations totaled 742 megawatts (MW) in Q2 2012, up 45% over the previous quarter and 116% over Q2 2011. Source: Solar Market Insight report from GTM Research and SEIA.
? ? ? ? Strong Job Growth: Solar employs 119,000 Americans across all 50 states. Solar job growth has far outpaced the general economy with 13.2% annual growth over 2011. Source: The National Solar Jobs Census from the Solar Foundation.
? ? ? ? Overwhelming Bipartisan Support: 92% of Americans agree that it's important to use and develop more solar. Source: Hart Research National Solar Survey 2012.

Rhino killings for horns rapidly rise in S. Africa

VAALKOP DAM NATURE RESERVE, South Africa (AP) ? By the time ranchers found the rhinoceros calf wandering alone in this idyllic setting of scrub brush and acacia, the nature reserve had become yet another blood-soaked crime scene in South Africa?s losing battle against poachers.

Hunters killed eight rhinos at the private Finfoot Game Reserve inside the Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve this month with single rifle shots that pierced their hearts and lungs. The poachers? objective: the rhinos? horns, cut away with knives and popped off the dead animals? snouts for buyers in Asia who pay the U.S. street value of cocaine for a material they believe cures diseases.

That insatiable demand for horns has sparked the worst recorded year of rhino poaching in South Africa in decades, with at least 588 rhinos killed so far, their carcasses rotting in private farms and national parks. Without drastic change, experts warn that soon the number of rhinos killed will outpace the number of the calves born ? putting the entire population at risk in a nation that is the last bastion for the prehistoric-looking animals.

??This is a full-on bush war we are fighting,?? said Marc Lappeman, who runs the Finfoot reserve with his father Miles and has begun armed vigilante patrols to protect the remaining rhinos there. ??We here are willing to die for these animals.??

Unchecked hunting nearly killed off all the rhinos in southern Africa at the beginning of the 1900s. Conservationists in the 1960s airlifted rhinos to different parts of South Africa to spread them out. That helped the population grow to the point that South Africa is now home to some 20,000 rhinos ? 90 percent of all rhinos in Africa.

From the 1990s to 2007, rhino poachings in South Africa averaged about 15 a year, according to a recent report by the wildlife trade monitoring network TRAFFIC. In 2008, however, poachers killed 83 rhinos and by 2009, the number hit 122, the report says.

The killings grew exponentially after that: 333 in 2010, 448 in 2011 and as of Tuesday, at least 588 rhino killed this year alone, according to South Africa?s Department of Environmental Affairs.

??That the year-on-year rhino poaching losses have continued to grow in the face of heightened awareness, constant media attention and concerted law enforcement effort is testament to just how pervasive and gripping the rhino crisis in South Africa has become,?? TRAFFIC wrote in its August report. ??If poaching continues to increase annually as it has done since 2007, then eventually deaths will exceed births and rhino numbers in South Africa will start to fall.??

Most of the killings, according to government statistics, occur in South Africa?s massive Kruger National Park, covering 19,400 square kilometers (7,500 square miles) in the country?s northeast abutting its borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. There, the impoverished slip across the park?s borders, largely from Mozambique, to kill and dehorn rhino, earning the equivalent of months? wages in a single night of hunting. South Africa has deployed soldiers in the park with dogs to sniff out poachers, but their small force can?t sufficiently cover a park that?s roughly the same size as New Jersey.

The horns are sold by criminal gangs and smuggled into Asia. While poachers have been shot dead and hundreds of suspects arrested this year, the rhino killings continue unstopped largely because the trade is transnational and worth millions of dollars, said Julian Rademeyer, a journalist in South Africa who wrote ??Killing for Profit,?? a book on rhino poaching that came out this month.

??The problem with law enforcement strategies is they end where our border ends,?? Rademeyer said.

And law enforcement can?t always be trusted in South Africa, where corruption eats away at the nation. There have been several cases of rangers assigned to guard parks being arrested for aiding poachers.

With both South Africa and Swaziland allowing rhino to be hunted legally, criminal gangs have obtained hunting licenses under false pretenses. Gangs have hired prostitutes and the poor from Asia and Eastern Europe to pose as big game hunters with licenses to kill a single rhino apiece, Rademeyer said. Their ??trophies?? end up shipped back to Asia, where the horns are removed and sold.

Rhino horn is made of keratin, a tough protein found in human fingernails. Doctors have repeatedly said the material has no medical value. In Asia, however, demand for rhino horn has jumped dramatically. Experts blame it partly on a widespread rumor in Vietnam that rhino horn cures cancer, though some elite Vietnamese grind up horn and take it as a hangover cure or as a fever reducer.Continued...

Groucho Marx voted America?s favorite facial hair icon

Comedian Groucho Marx was voted as having the best facial hair in an online survey. (Wikicommons)A new survey confirms that America is a country full of "Marxists." But in this case, we're talking about facial hair, not political preferences.

According to results from the findmypast.com survey, Americans chose the late comedian Groucho Marx as having the best facial hair. Of course, the results were particularly noteworthy since Marx's mustache was a fake for most of his career.

Marx's trademark mustache was actually made of greasepaint, though he chose to grow a real mustache in later years rather than applying the makeup for performances.

Two of the three top finishers in the survey are fictional characters. The runners-up to Groucho Marx were the Dr. Seuss character the Lorax and the "Hunger Games" character Seneca Crane.

When it comes to the facial hair of everyday, real-life people, the survey found that North Americans overwhelmingly favor the mustache (72.8 percent) over any other kind of facial hair. Beards were a distant second (14.6 percent), followed by sideburns (6.8 percent) and "all of the above" (5.8 percent).

"Facial hair has moved in and out of fashion over the years and the historical record is full of shaggy characters," said D. Joshua Taylor, findmypast.com's lead genealogist.

Of course, you might want to stay away from the mustache, and any other facial hair for that matter, if you plan on running for public office.

Thomas Dewey was the last major party candidate for president of the United States to sport facial hair, losing the 1948 election to clean-shaven Harry S. Truman. A 1986 Boston Globe article even went so far as to argue that Dewey's mustache worked against him in the race.

With our condolences to Tom Selleck, the rest of the top 10 facial hair favorites:

    4. Filmmaker and actor John Waters, known for his pencil-thin mustache

    5. Ambrose Burnside, a Union Army general in the American Civil War whose facial hair style coined the word "sideburns"

    6. Artist Salvador Dali

    7. Funnyman Zach Galifianakis

    8. Fictional anchorman Tom Tucker from "Family Guy"

The Big 3 from 'Evita' to leave show in January

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Big Three in the Broadway musical "Evita" ? Ricky Martin, Elena Roger and Michael Cerveris ? will leave the show together after the Jan. 26 performance.

Producers of the Tony Award-nominated revival of Tim Rice's and Andrew Lloyd Webber's landmark musical said Monday night the show will continue its open-ended run, and new stars will be announced at a later date.

The revival opened on March 12 at Broadway's Marquis Theatre, directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Rob Ashford. It has broken the theater's box office record seven times, but now faces a tough time filling its three main roles.

The musical tells the story of Argentina's Eva Peron, who rose from the slums to the presidential mansion. Roger plays Eva, Cerveris her husband and Martin is Che.

Darren Sammy hails Tino Best ? Cricket News Update

West Indies skipper Darren Sammy, on Sunday lavished praise on fast bowler Tino Best for his impressive show in the 2-0 Test series whitewash over Bangladesh.

Whilst Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels all starred with the bat, the latter scoring a dazzling double century, Tino Best was the pick of the West Indies bowlers, picking up six wicket apiece in both games. The 31-year-old Barbadian speedster finished the two-match Test series at the top of the wickets chart, clinching twelve wickets from four innings at an impressive average of 14.33.

"Tino is a brilliant bowler, as he performed consistently. He put us in good positions and more. It's good to have him in the side, performing so well for us," said Sammy while speaking to media reporters at the post-match press conference after his side romped to a 10-wicket win on the final day of the second Test in Khulna, on Sunday.

However, Best?s match winning performances came at a cost, with the Barbados quick ruled out of the limited-overs leg of the itinerary, commencing in Khulna on Friday.

"[Best] will need to return home...for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation," West Indies? team physio CJ Clark confirmed yesterday. "It?s expected that he?ll be back to full fitness for the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament in January."

The right-armer picked up a Grade 1 lateral hamstring strain on the first day of the second Test and bowled only ten overs in Bangladesh's first innings. However, he made a stunning comeback in the second innings returning with a six-wicket haul, to help his side register a comfortable 10-wicket win over the hosts, to complete 2-0 series whitewash.

West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson admitted that losing the frontline seamer ahead of the limited overs leg of the tour was unfortunate; however, he said that it is important for the team that Best remains fit for assignments next year.

"It?s unfortunate that Tino will be leaving, after he came back and bowled so well in the second innings of this game," Gibson said. "There is a lot of cricket coming up next year and it will be important for us that he gets himself ready for that cricket."

Uncapped Barbados fast bowler Jason Holder has been called up as Best?s replacement for the upcoming ODI series and the one-off T20 International.

New Bank of England chief will face slow recovery: King

LONDON (Reuters) - The Bank of England's outgoing governor Mervyn King underlined on Tuesday the uphill task his successor faces, saying the bank might have to buy even more government bonds to help drag Britain's economy back to health.

Finance minister George Osborne delivered a shock on Monday by appointing Canada's central bank head Mark Carney to be the first non-Briton to head the BoE, just over a week before he lays out the government's latest budget plans.

The euro zone debt crisis, high inflation and fiscal austerity have weighed heavily on economic recovery, which in turn has undermined the Conservative-led government's efforts to pay off the costs of the 2008 financial crisis.

While official numbers on Tuesday confirmed the UK economy grew 1 percent in the third quarter, King said his regime at the central bank should probably have made clear earlier that a substantial recovery would not come in 2013 and 2014.

"It may be unreasonable to expect anything other than a slow and protracted recovery, absent a further fall in the real exchange rate," King told a parliamentary committee.

"In such an environment, there are limits to the ability of domestic policy to stimulate private sector demand as the economy adjusts to a new equilibrium," he said.

"In the event that further easing is required, I believe it appropriate to continue with our policy of purchasing gilts."

Paul Fisher, a BoE policymaker speaking alongside King, said Britain's economy may well need more monetary easing next year.

Two other policymakers, Ben Broadbent and Martin Weale, said they might have backed more asset purchases in November had it not been for high inflation and a BoE transfer of money to the government that will provide about 35 billion pounds' stimulus.

Tuesday's official figures confirmed the country had exited recession. But the expansion was flattered by spending at the London Olympics and a rebound from the preceding quarter, when an extra public holiday dented output.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development struck a more pessimistic note, predicting on Tuesday that Britain's economy would shrink 0.1 percent this year and grow just 0.9 percent in 2013 - much weaker than its May forecast of 1.9 percent growth next year.

Economists said Carney, whose appointment was welcomed by financial markets on Monday, was likely to face an economy still struggling to return to solid growth when he takes over in July.

"I am completely confident with Mark Carney as someone with whom the Bank is in very good hands - as indeed is the role of governor which I am sure he will carry out with very great distinction," King said.

    TROUBLE AHEAD

The downbeat growth predictions will raise the pressure on Osborne to come up with measures to boost the economy when he delivers his half-yearly budget statement next week.

Business surveys have painted a gloomy picture of the fourth quarter, and retail sales - a gauge of vital consumer spending - posted a surprise drop in October.

"The good news from the third quarter is unlikely to last," said Rob Wood, economist at Berenberg Bank. "With the one-off boost from the Olympics unwinding in the fourth quarter and business surveys downbeat, a return to contraction is likely."

Compared to a year ago, GDP was 0.1 percent lower, slightly worse than first thought, the Office for National Statistics said.

Consumer spending rose 0.6 percent on the quarter, the biggest increase in more than two years, driven by spending on recreation and culture, including tickets for the London Olympics and Paralympics which took place in the summer.

Britain's net trade position improved, with exports rising 1.7 percent on the quarter - partly due to spending by tourists - and imports dipping 0.4 percent, the ONS said.

Output in Britain's services sector, which makes up more than three quarters of GDP, rose by 1.3 percent in the third quarter - the largest increase in five years. It fell 0.1 percent in the second quarter.

Industrial output was 0.9 percent higher, while construction contracted by 2.6 percent.

Britain has not fully recovered the output lost in the wake of the financial crisis, while the euro zone's debt problems, government austerity to reduce the budget deficit and banks' reluctance to lend are holding back economic growth.

Serb sentenced for beating in US freed from jail

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? A former Serb college basketball player serving a two-year prison sentence for beating an American into a coma in New York state has been freed about two months early.

Miladin Kovacevic was sentenced by a Serb court for his attack on fellow Binghamton University student Bryan Steinhauer of Brooklyn in 2008 in a barroom brawl.

The Serb's early release Monday is part of a government amnesty including over 1,000 prisoners sentenced for lesser crimes.

After the brawl, Kovacevic jumped bail in the U.S. and fled to Serbia, which refused to extradite him, angering Washington.

The Serb government eventually paid $900,000 (?694,230) to Steinhauer's family as part of an agreement that also included putting Kovacevic on trial in Belgrade.

The Obama administration and Steinhauer's family both called Kovacevic's sentence too lenient.

But some of the borough?s priciest real estate is actually much farther south, in communities often overlooked by outsiders, including Gravesend, Bay Ridge and Brighton Beach.
In fact, some of the most expensive properties ever sold in Brooklyn are located in its southern neighborhoods, where high-end real estate often boasts water views, in-ground pools and plenty of square footage.
Brooklyn?s current record holder is a townhouse at 212 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights, which sold for $11 million earlier this year, according to the real estate data provider PropertyShark. But before that, an 8,200-square-foot brick mansion at 2111 East Second Street in Gravesend held the record for Brooklyn?s priciest-ever transaction, selling for $10.26 million in 2009.
The priciest sale in Brooklyn in 2011 was also in the southern half of the borough ? a single-family house at 451 Avenue S in Gravesend sold for $10.25 million.
The strength of South Brooklyn?s real estate market is due in part to the tight-knit communities that live there, brokers said. Over the years, for example, Gravesend has attracted a small but significant population of Sephardic Jews primarily from Syria, Lebanon and Egypt. Brighton Beach, of course, is known for its preponderance of Russian immigrants.
Many wealthy members of these communities choose to remain in South Brooklyn rather than decamping for more fashionable areas of the city, sources say.
Buyers of South Brooklyn luxury properties ?could afford to be anywhere, but they consciously pick to be there? because of their ties to the area, explained Sheepshead Bay native Victoria Shtainer, an executive vice president with Prudential Douglas Elliman.

Egypt's political foes dig in their heels

CAIRO (AP) ? Supporters and opponents of Egypt's president on Sunday grew more entrenched in their potentially destabilizing battle over the Islamist leader's move to assume near absolute powers, with neither side appearing willing to back down as the stock market plunged amid the fresh turmoil.

The standoff poses one of the hardest tests for the nation's liberal and secular opposition since Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago. Failure to sustain protests and eventually force Mohammed Morsi to loosen control could consign it to long-term irrelevance.

Clashes between the two sides spilled onto the streets for a third day since the president issued edicts that make him immune to oversight of any kind, including that of the courts.

A teenager was killed and at least 40 people were wounded when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the president's Muslim Brotherhood in the Nile Delta city of Damanhoor, according to security officials.

It was the first reported death from the street battles that erupted across much of the nation on Friday, the day after Morsi's decrees were announced. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, identified the boy as 15-year-old Islam Hamdi Abdel-Maqsood.

The tensions also dealt a fresh blow to the economy, which has suffered due to the problems plaguing the Arab world's most populous nation since Mubarak's ouster.

Egypt's benchmark EGX30 stock index dropped 9.59 percentage points Sunday in the first trading session since Morsi issued his decrees. The losses were among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks immediately after Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising last year. The loss in the value of shares was estimated at close to $5 billion.

The judiciary, the main target of the edicts, has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and other cities on Sunday.

But the nation's highest judicial body, the Supreme Judiciary Council, watered down its opposition to the decrees on Sunday. It told judges and prosecutors to return to work and announced that its members would meet with Morsi on Monday to try to persuade him to restrict immunity to major state decisions like declaring war or martial law or breaking diplomatic relations with foreign nations.

Morsi supporters insist that the measures were necessary to prevent the courts, which already dissolved the elected lower house of parliament, from further holding up moves to stability by disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution, as judges were considering doing. Both the parliament and the constitutional assembly are dominated by Islamists. Morsi accuses Mubarak loyalists in the judiciary of seeking to thwart the revolution's goals and barred the judiciary from disbanding the constitutional assembly or parliament's upper house.

Opposition activists, however, have been adamant since the crisis first erupted that they would not enter a dialogue with Morsi's regime before the decrees are rescinded.

Protesters also clashed with police at Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the mass protests that toppled Mubarak, and in the side streets and avenues leading off the plaza. The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the police, said 267 protesters have been arrested and 164 policemen injured since the unrest began a week ago, initially to mark the anniversary of street protests a year ago against the nation's then-military rulers. Forty-two protesters were killed in those demonstrations.

The ministry did not say how many protesters were injured in the latest clashes in Tahrir, but security officials put the figure at 260.

Hundreds of protesters staging a sit-in in Tahrir have vowed not to leave before Morsi rescinds his decrees. The two sides also have called for massive rival protests Tuesday in Cairo, signaling a protracted struggle.

Morsi's office issued an English-language statement late Sunday defending his decrees and repeating the argument he used when addressing supporters Friday outside his Cairo palace ? that they were designed to bolster the country's transition to democratic rule and dismantle Mubarak's old regime.

"The presidency reiterates the temporary nature of the said measures, which are not meant to concentrate powers," it said. The statement also pledged Morsi's commitment to engaging all political forces on the drafting of a new constitution. Secular and Christian members withdrew from the panel drafting the document, alleging that the Islamists who dominate the body have hijacked the process to produce a charter with an Islamist slant.

Nader Omran, of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice party, said any changes to the decrees were "out of the question" but Morsi might "make pledges, vows or addendums explaining his position to clarify the decrees."

He said Morsi would hand over his legislative powers to parliament's upper chamber once a new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and ahead of parliamentary elections. The presidency did not confirm the claim, but doing so would leave the Egyptian leader with the state's executive and legislative powers until around April.

The move also has caused some internal discord among the Morsi camp, with one aide, Samer Marqous, already resigning to protest the "undemocratic" decree.

Another Morsi adviser Ayman al-Sayyad wrote on his Twitter account that the president met Sunday for the second time in as many days with his 17-member advisory council and three of his assistants.

"I think it (the meeting) produced a genuine realization of the gravity of the situation ... We were candid today in our meeting with the president and we now expect practical steps on the ground." He did not elaborate.

Leading Egyptian democracy advocate Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Laureate and a former director of the U.S. nuclear agency, warned Saturday of increasing turmoil that could potentially lead to the military stepping in unless Morsi rescinds his new powers.

Egypt's liberal and secular groups ? long divided, weakened and uncertain as Islamist parties rose to power in the months after the revolution ? are seeking to rally in response to the decrees as the stakes are high. The fractured opposition came together as the engine of the 18-day uprising that forced Mubarak to step down after 29 years in power, bringing millions out on the streets, but they have failed to recapture that energy after months of setbacks.

Morsi, meanwhile, already has backed down twice in high-profile battles with the judiciary in the five months he's been in office. The U.S.-trained engineer failed to challenge the court ruling dissolving parliament's powerful lower chamber and had to rescind his decision to fire the country's attorney-general, Mubarak-era appointee Abdel-Maguid Mahmoud, in October. He fired him on Thursday as part of his edicts.
