Foreign airlines urged to use GPS at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Federal aviation officials have advised all foreign airlines to use a GPS system instead of visual reckoning and cockpit instruments when landing at San Francisco International Airport in the wake of the deadly Asiana Airlines crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued the recommendation on Sunday involving main runways at the airport, saying in a statement that it took the action after noticing an increase in aborted landings by some foreign carriers flying visual approaches into the airport.

Pilots on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 had been cleared to make a visual approach when the plane crash-landed on July 6. Three people died, and 180 others were injured among the 307 aboard the flight that came in too low and too slow, slamming its landing gear into a seawall well before the actual runway.

Seconds before the accident, the pilots called for a go-around, meaning they wanted to abort the landing and circle for another approach. The FAA said such maneuvers are "routine, standardized procedures that can occur once a day or more at busy airports for various reasons."

Two weeks after the crash, another Asiana flight aborted its landing, San Francisco airport officials said. In addition, they said a Taiwanese EVA Air flight approached too low last week then aborted and began another approach.

The FAA said it was investigating the EVA flight. It did not say how many other such incidents have occurred.

Airport officials met with Asiana managers and FAA representatives after the July 19 aborted landing by the Asiana aircraft to see if any additional measures were necessary, airport spokesman Doug Yakel said.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein also has met with federal and local officials about improving airport safety. Spokesman Brian Weiss said Monday that Feinstein also spoke with the South Korea ambassador. Asiana is based in that country.

In clear weather, it's not unusual for pilots to make a visual approach, using the view through their windshield.

They also can use an instrument system called a glide slope indicator, although that has been out of service in San Francisco since June 1 because of ongoing runway improvements.

The FAA said all foreign carriers should continue to use alternate instrument approaches until the glide slopes return to service in late August.

The advice came from "an abundance of caution," the FAA said in its statement. However, it's not a requirement. Foreign pilots can choose to fly visual approaches, but they typically accept air traffic control assignments.

Ryse: Son of Rome Gets Behind-the-Scenes Video Showing Performance Capture

Ryse: Son of Rome, the next-gen hack and slash game from Crytek for the Xbox One, has just received a brand new video showing off the performance capture process and going behind the scenes of the creation of the E3 2013 demo.

Ryse: Son of Rome was one of the most impressive titles that were demonstrated by Microsoft for the Xbox One at E3 2013, showing off some great graphics and pretty gory combat.

In order to show just how the game's demo was made and how the performance capture process transforms into actual gameplay and cut scenes, a new video has just been released by Microsoft and Crytek.

As you can see in the footage above, Ryse required quite a lot of effort from Crytek but also from the actors who brought the different characters to life.

The game will appear alongside the Xbox One in November.

Panama eliminates Mexico from Gold Cup, will face USA

Panama defeated Mexico 2-1 in the semifinal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Cowboys stadium in Dallas in front of 81,410 mostly Mexican fans. Since June 7, 2013 Panama has maintained dominance over el Tri, beginning with the 0-0 World Cup Qualifier at the Romulo Fernandez stadium in Panama City, Panama. Like it is becoming a custom, the fans began to chant ?fuera Chepo!? or ?Chepo out!? as the game came to a close.

"); }

The real hero of the game was Panamanian goalkeeper Jaime Penedo who kept the Mexican attack at bay. El Tri maintained a 51% possession during the game, but could not get the ball in the net. Despite keeping possession, they never really controlled the game and gave up too many spaces for a speedy Panamanian team that enjoyed the room available to them.

It took 13 minutes for Blas Perez to put the ball in the net for the Canaleros. The FC Dallas striker easily beat out Jonathan Orozco to give the Central Americans the 1-0. Panama fell back to defend waiting on a counterstrike.

Luis Montes closed the gap in the 25th minute with a surprise goal. The goal forced the Panamanians to defend themselves. For the remainder of the half Panama kept an eight man defense with only the strikers up front waiting for the counterstrike opportunity. Mexico applied pressure but the imprecisions prevented El Tri from making a difference on the pitch.

The night fell apart for Mexico when a combination from Gabriel and Roman Torres gave Panama the 2-1 advantage. The players maneuvered past Joel Huiqui and Roman took the shot to seal the game.

The Panamanians once again fell back. For the remaining 29 minutes they gave up control of the ball to Mexico who attacked but still could not make a difference. Montes had an opportunity to close the gap, but Penedo was there to keep the scoreboard from changing.

Mexico coach Jose Manuel ?Chepo? de la Torre made a last ditch effort to even the score and force overtime. He brought in Isaac Brizuela and Javier ?Chuletita? Orozco for more scoring options. Brizuela had the best opportunity to extend the game with a shot. However, Penedo was able to defend his net once more. The final minutes ticked and Mexico increased their attack. Panama had completely given control of the ball to the Mexicans as the entire team fell back to protect the lead. With Panama defending well and Mexico unable to put the ball in the net, the fans began to chant, ?Fuera Chepo!?

Time ran out for Mexico, Panama prevailed winning their second game against El Tri in their history. They won their second encounter against the ?giant? of CONCACAF in back-to-back games and extended their undefeated streak against Mexico to three games. Panama will face the United States on Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.

Utah teen survives train crash, describes 'gruesome' scene

Stephen Ward, an 18-year-old who survived this week's train crash in Spain that killed 78 people, described the incident saying, "It felt like a rollercoaster."

By Brady McCombs, Associated Press

Seconds before the Spanish train he was aboard lifted off the tracks "like a roller coaster," Mormon missionary Stephen Ward said he glanced up from the journal he was writing and noticed a backpack tumble from a rack. Moments later, he blacked out as the train smashed into a concrete wall at high speed.?

He awoke to a scene that seemed like a nightmare.?

"Everyone was covered in blood, there was smoke coming up off the train," said Ward, 18, of Bountiful, Utah. "There was a lot of crying, a lot of screaming. There were plenty of dead bodies. It was quite gruesome, to be honest."?

AP Photo/The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Scott Jackson

Stephen Ward, 18, of Bountiful, Utah, was among the survivors of the Spain train crash that left 78 dead.

Ward was one of at least five Americans hurt Wednesday when the train hurtled off the rails and smashed into a security wall. One American died, the U.S. State Department said. The American victim was identified by the Diocese of Arlington as Ana Maria Cordoba, an administrative employee from northern Virginia.?

Ward said an information screen for passengers showed that the train was traveling 194 kph (121 mph) moments before the crash.

He said that speed was nearly double the speed they had been cruising at since leaving Madrid earlier that afternoon.?

Related: Driver of crashed train to be questioned

The train was traveling fast when it derailed Wednesday and killed dozens, but officials haven't yet confirmed how fast. An Associated Press analysis of security camera video of the crash indicated the train hit the bend at the crash site going twice the speed limit or more.?

Raymond Ward / AP

Stephen Ward (third from left) poses with his family six weeks ago in the Salt Lake Airport when Stephen Ward was leaving on his way to the missionary training center in Madrid.

Ward's face was caked in blood, his leg bruised and his neck injured. But he survived a horrific crash that killed 78 people ? his latest brush with death.?

Four years earlier, Ward was diagnosed with a rare cancer known as Burkitt's lymphoma and nearly died while undergoing a bone marrow transplant.?

"From a religious standpoint, I'd like to say that God has something in store for me and that there's a reason I'm still here," Stephen Ward said in a phone interview with The Associated Press from La Coruna, Spain. "I count myself very lucky and very blessed to have been able to survive so many things."?

Ward said he suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck but has been discharged from the hospital. He expects to stay in Spain to complete his two-year mission with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which he started six weeks ago.?

On Wednesday, Ward was supposed to board an earlier train from Madrid to El Ferrol, a coastal city in northwest Spain where he was sent to begin proselyting. But he accidentally bought a ticket for the wrong day and instead went on a later train.?

When he awoke from the crash, somebody was helping him walk out of his train car and crawl out of a ditch where the train car came to rest. He thought he was dreaming for 30 seconds until he felt his blood-drenched face and noticed the scene around him.?
Emergency responders arrived within minutes and led him to a grassy area away from the wreckage where he laid for three hours before being taken by ambulance to a hospital.?

Ward's parents didn't know he was on the train. They knew only that he was scheduled to leave Wednesday from Madrid, where had spent the first six weeks at a training center learning Spanish and how to be a missionary. When Raymond Ward, 45, saw news of the crash on his cellphone, he figured it had nothing to do with his son.?

But an hour later, a Mormon church official in Spain called Raymond Ward and told him his son was on the train ? and survived.?
A picture of the 6-foot-6 Stephen Ward appeared in a Spanish newspaper, blood running down his face, his father said. Stephen Ward also gave an interview from his hospital bed to The Daily Telegraph newspaper in London recounting the harrowing experience.?

"He looks terrible, but he's alive so that's good," Raymond Ward said. "When we talked with him he was in good spirits."?

Stephen Ward is no stranger to hospitals, having spent countless hours fighting to survive cancer when he was younger. He's been healthy since then, and is a gregarious, happy young man who plays piano and excelled in school, his dad said. He left for his mission after one year at Brigham Young University, where he is studying chemical engineering.?

"Not many people come that close to death twice before age 20," Raymond Ward said. "I'm just grateful that he's alive and that's he my son."?

Senator Presses Consumer Bureau on Installment Lender World ...

Citing our investigation, Sen. Ron Wyden asked a top official from the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau about what can be done to address abuses by installment lenders.

During a Senate committee hearing Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., pressed a top official from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on what can be done to address abuses by installment lenders. Like Payday lenders, installment loan companies often trap borrowers in a cycle of debt, charging effective annual rates that can exceed 200 percent. Wyden pointed to ProPublica?s story from May that focused on one of America?s largest installment lenders, World Finance:

Our investigation ? published together with our partner, Marketplace ? found that lenders such as World often load their loans with insurance products that can double their cost. They also profit by persuading borrowers to use the product like a credit card, renewing loans over and over, leading to ballooning extra fees and interest. World boasts more than 800,000 customers, while the broader installment loan industry claims more than 10 million.

?So what can be done about World Acceptance?? asked Wyden, referring to the company?s corporate name. ?Is there anything else that you need to do, that Congress needs to do, that regulators need to do??

David Silberman, the CFPB?s associate director for research, markets, and regulations, gave the same answer the CFPB gave us when we first published our story: The CFPB has broad authority to crack down on non-bank lenders like World for breaking broad consumer protection laws, but the bureau does not yet conduct regular examinations of installment lenders such as World ? though it could in the future.

Silberman declined to say whether any particular company was or was not being investigated. Wyden pressed for more information in writing, and Silberman promised to provide it within a couple weeks.

The hearing was held by the Senate Special Committee on Aging and focused on how payday and other high-cost loans impact seniors.

Citymaps, an ambitious Google Maps competitor with a social twist, launches on the iPhone

Taking on Google, Apple, or Nokia in the maps space as a small startup is a little crazy. But that isn?t stopping Citymaps, a high-reaching service that has mapped every city in the U.S. and includes a full-fledged social network that lets you share maps with friends.

Before today, Citymaps used to exist as an iPhone app that spanned only a few cities, including New York City, San Francisco, Austin, and Boston, and it showed detailed business locations in those cities. But the app has been completely redesigned and revamped so it has almost no resemblance to its prior ?proof-of-concept? version.

The new Citymaps app is vector-based and includes details for more than 15 million businesses in the U.S. It also places on emphasis on social features so regular folks, brands, and publishers can easily create and share maps of the best places to go. So, for example, you (or a magazine) could make a list of the best bars in your neighborhood or a list of your favorite restaurants in your city. Once you do that, your friends (or followers) can see and even add to that map with their own suggestions.

There are also basic navigation features included in Citymaps, including driving, walking, and public transit directions ? the sort of stuff people rely on from Google Maps. And when you just browse maps, you can see business locations in bubbles on the map. If the business is in a larger bubble, Citymaps has detected it to be actively talked about on social media. When you tap on a business, you see a detailed profile of it, including Instagram photos, Twitter posts, and other info.

Citymaps CEO and founder Elliot Cohen

Sean Ludwig/VentureBeat

Citymaps CEO and founder Elliot Cohen

Citymaps was founded by Elliot Cohen, a former product manager at AudioBase and an associate for development division of NYC realty investment trust?Vornado Realty Trust.

?We?re probably one of the only maps startups in the world at this point that?s built their own experience and not just a mashup that?s built on top of Google Maps,? Cohen told us.

Cohen says he understands the challenges he faces. He?s been working on Citymaps for about four years and has a team of just 12 full-time employees. To fight the big dogs for underlying map data, Citymaps pulls from OpenStreetMap. Outside of that, however, Cohen?s team has been building a lot on top of OpenStreetMap data. It has been collecting and categorizing tons of business location data and trying to integrate a social networking layer with the map. Some business location data comes from Yext, while other data comes from social networks. All of that, plus the ability to create and share Maps, gives it enough muscle to fight the power, according to Cohen.

?Millions of maps are made on Google Maps,? Cohen said. ?It?s a terrible experience. It?s not particularly attractive. It?s not social at all. And the maps go away. You can?t just search Google for a celebrity map on L.A., for example. So we want to own the notion of social map making.?

The next thing on Citymaps? to-do list is to get an Android application up and running. Cohen says the Android app is ?about eight weeks away? from being complete. He wants to see the app on desktop web browsers as well, but since the app is build on WebGL, he needed to wait until Internet Explorer supported it. Thankfully, WebGL support is coming to Internet Explorer later this year.

Cohen says the company is focusing just on the U.S. for now, but has plans for international mapping down the road.

New York City-based Citymaps has raised $5 million to date, including a $2.5 million round back in March 2012. Investors include Ashton Kutcher, Dave Leyrer, and Dave Levin.

Check out the video below for more on the app.

World Boardgaming Championships ? Petrie's Family Games ...

The following is a reprint from Alliance Games

July 29-August 4, 2013, Lancaster, PA

The World Boardgaming Championships, or ?WBC?, as it is known to its adherents, is not your typical gaming convention. For starters, its owned and operated by its attendees who vote for the Non-Profit Corporation?s management and event eligibility. You can travel the world over and not encounter anything else quite like it. WBC is not the biggest gaming mecca, but most of its attendees think it?s the best. Dealing exclusively in board and card games, it attracts the most competitors for those games on the planet.

As such, it is home to what many in the trade refer to as ?elite? gamers ? those who view their game collection as something more than a pastime.?They find enjoyment in competing and sharing vicarious adventures with other kindred souls. It?s not just about winning, but the journey of being recognized as the best you can be and the sense of accomplishment that it brings. In short, it treats gaming as a hobby or sport with goals to be obtained ? not just a diversion. WBC does this by adherence to a competitive theme.? Not only are its champions pictured and their exploits detailed on the web, but their achievements are accorded ?laurels? ? the currency by which it keeps score and ranks its members with a common denominator regardless of the diverse games in which they compete. By such means, an overall champion is named each year in a meta-competition amongst all of the events offered, including those of Euro Quest and ongoing email tournaments that widen worldwide participation.

Amassing laurels allows one to post their high water mark against the passage of time and to gauge their progress in the hobby similar to marking previous high scores in a video game. Winning a tournament is a feel good experience to be sure, akin to past or never achieved athletic prowess, but it doesn?t end there. The WBC is all about traditions. Champions attempt to repeat their victories, amassing higher levels of mastery akin to the various colored belts of karate. Laurel totals and championships of the past 20 years are a matter of public record and proclaimed on event kiosks at every tournament.

With all this emphasis on winning, a high intimidation factor for the uninitiated is to be expected. In truth, WBC offers an incredibly friendly atmosphere.?The players tend to have shared experiences and value the camaraderie of skilled opponents who enhance the challenge and excitement found in the games. Most compete in the same events year after year and come to know and befriend their opponents? so much so, that among the regulars WBC is often said to be more about reunion than tournaments. Then too, sportsmanship is stressed. Prizes are honorary in nature (shield shaped plaques in keeping with a Roman theme for levels of achievement).?And not all tournaments cater to the skillful. Events are color coded by the experience required. A red kiosk summons the experienced only with quarter neither expected nor given. Yellow, by far the most numerous category, admits beginners if they have read the rules or attended an hour demonstration beforehand. Tales of helpful advice freely given toneophytes costing their veteran advisors the match are frequent. Green events are so simple that your fellow players teach you as you play.

The Game Masters are volunteers with up to 20 years experience. Many take more pride in running their event than in playing themselves. Even the events are in competition at WBC ? vying to remain eligible for the following year?s slate that is purposely limited to provide focus. These GMs not only pay the same admission as their entrants, but they do so first and author a special web page preview of the event beforehand and an account of the action afterwards. It is a degree of dedication not found elsewhere. That, and the absence of individual event fees, makes attendees extremely loyal? many returning every year as an annual vacation from all across the world.

While tournaments are what sets WBC apart from other conventions, they are not the sole attraction. The week also features one of the best Auctions and flea markets for used and out-of-print games. A free kids program for those 12 and under augments the resort hotel?s claim as a family destination ? which is further enhanced by the adjacent amusement park (Dutch Wonderland). Open Gaming advocates have exclusive use of a 13,000 square-foot tiered dinner theatre with an extensive free Game Library. And those thirsting for the newest thing can play the latest games demonstrated in the Sampler Showcase or make purchases from a packed Vendors Room filled by many of the hobby?s best publishers. Check it out in detail at www.boardgamers.org.

The Anti-Gay Platform Probably Won't Even Work in Virginia Anymore

Ken Cuccinelli's election of strategy of running on his long-standing opposition to homosexuality might have worked in 2009, when Cuccinelli won the attorney general race in Virginia. But the country's shift on gay politics didn't miss the state, putting Cuccinelli at risk of losing key Republican donors and the governor's race.

RELATED: White House Gate-Crasher Running for Governor as 'Independent Republican'

The timing of his embrace of anti-gay rhetoric couldn't be much worse. Cuccinelli is running in a close race with Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Several polls, including one from Quinnipiac University last week, show McAuliffe with a slight lead. But in another metric, fundraising, McAuliffe is far ahead ??thanks, in part, to reticence from pas Republican donors to give to Cuccinelli. Bloomberg reports that Cuccinelli's adamant social conservative positions are a key factor in that antipathy. That attitude can be summarized in one quote.

?Mr. Cuccinelli?s very hard stance on some of the social issues is a concern for me,? said Virginia Beach developer Bruce L. Thompson, chief executive officer of Gold Key/PHR Hotels and Resorts, a financial backer of current Republican Governor Bob McDonnell who in May gave McAuliffe $25,000.

    Or, perhaps two:

?I?m an employer in Virginia, and Cuccinelli terrifies me,? said Gary Shapiro, the president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association in Arlington, which represents 2,000 technology companies.

?To attract the best employees, you don?t want to have the most backward policies in the country,? Shapiro said, referring to Cuccinelli?s stands on issues including abortion and gay rights.

Cuccinelli has raised 40 percent less than McAuliffe to date.

RELATED: Virginia Drops Law Firm that Dropped Republicans in the DOMA Case

But that shortfall isn't inspiring him to rethink his campaign focus. As we reported last week, Cuccinelli has put a renewed emphasis on bolstering the state's anti-sodomy law. That position, which seeks to frame a law that bans consensual oral and anal sex between adults as a key tool for combatting child predators, was eviscerated by MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell in a widely-shared segment last Wednesday.

RELATED: Virginia GOP Candidate E.W. Jackson Says Yoga Will Make Satan Possess You

Cuccinelli doubled-down on it in Virginia's gubernatorial debate on Saturday. The Hill reports Cuccinelli's response, when asked about his statements that homosexuality was unnatural: "My personal beliefs about the personal challenge of homosexuality haven't changed." Haven't changed, that is, since his 2009 declaration that "homosexual acts are wrong. They?re intrinsically wrong." His opponent was quick to seize the opportunity.

McAuliffe said such comments would drive businesses away from Virginia and said he would support changing the Virginia Constitution to allow same-sex marriage. Cuccinelli retorted that the suggestion business would suffer was laughable and offensive.

The attorney general might want to check in with Mr. Shapiro, of the Consumer Electronics Association.

RELATED: Virginia Is for Retro Anti-Sodomy Law Campaigns

Cuccinelli's willingness to adhere to his principles on the issue in the face of fundraising setbacks is one thing. If he's willing to do so in the face of electoral challenges is another thing. At right is a graph suggesting how attitudes toward one gay issue have changed in Virginia over the last ten years. In 2006, voters in the state overwhelmingly voted to ban gay marriage. But that same Quinnipiac poll which showed McAuliffe in the lead suggested that the trend has now fully reversed, with a majority of Virginians supporting gay marriage.

RELATED: Bob McDonnell's Family Got Some Gifts That Boost Vanity

More alarmingly for Cuccinelli is how that support correlates with support for his opponent. Women support McAuliffe by a margin of 48 percent-to-32 percent, a 16-point spread. Woman are also much more likely to support same-sex marriage, approving of it by a 55 percent-to-39 percent margin. The difference there? Sixteen percentage points.

It's safe to assume that the days in which candidates at a state or federal level could be explicit in opposition to equality for gays has passed. During last year's presidential primaries, Texas Gov. Rick Perry released an ad titled, "Strong," lamenting that gays could serve openly in the military but kids couldn't celebrate Christmas in school. Perry didn't get onto the ballot in Virginia, but he finished in second-to-last place among the seven candidates in the popular vote.

If Cuccinelli continues to see opposition from donors and voters due to his strong conservative views, he could similarly finish in second-to-last place in the gubernatorial race. Even in a three-person race, that's not good enough.

Photo: Cuccinelli points his finger during Saturday's debate. (AP)

Rosy Esparza Falls From Six Flags Over Texas' Roller Coaster, Dies (Video)

Rosy Esparza fatally fell from the "Texas Giant" roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas on Friday night.

After Esparza's death in the park at 6:30 p.m., the ride was immediately shut down, but the rest of the park remained open (video below).

Six Flags Over Texas canceled a concert by singer Bridgit Mendler that was scheduled for Saturday night as well as KIDZ Star USA talent search auditions on Saturday and Sunday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. The investigation into the death at Texas Giant is still ongoing. We are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of the accident. The ride will remain closed," said a spokesperson for the amusement park.

Some witnesses say that Esparza?s safety restraint might have come loose or was not secured tightly.

Six Flags' park guest Carmen Brown said that Esparza expressed concern to a Six Flags Over Texas' employee that she was not secured in her seat.

?He was basically nonchalant,? Brown told the Dallas Morning News. ?He was, like, ?As long as you heard it click, you?re fine.? Hers was the only one that went down once, and she didn?t feel safe. But they let her still get on the ride. The lady basically tumbled over. We heard her screaming. We were, like, ?Did she just fall???

Kanisha Howell told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth: ?When it got in the air and started coming down, I don?t know if she had a seizure or what, but she fell out of the cart and just fell out of the sky. We?re leaving now because my daughter, we both cried and were terrified and I didn?t want to ride anything else.?

Arlington police declined to comment on the accident.

The Texas Giant opened in 1990 as the world?s tallest wooden roller coaster, but was converted to a steel-and-wood hybrid in April 2011.
