Wounded warriors from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) gathered at the Rockville Ice Arena on January 27 for a game of adaptive sled hockey.
The game is part of the rehabilitation of the injured service members. Kira M. Zevan, an assistant in the WRNMMC Adaptive Sports Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation program, shared that the adaptive sled hockey clinic served as the inaugural event between USA Warriors Hockey and the Military Advance Training Center (MATC) Adaptive Sports Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation Program of the WRNMMC.
Among the wounded warriors who participated in the program was 22?year-old Marine Corps Cpl. Kevork Khachadurian, who shared: ?It was nice [and] a good opportunity? I never even watched hockey before and wasn?t really interested, but it was fun.?
Khachadurian was injured in Afghanistan, by an improvised explosive device (IED), in August, 2011. He had been navigating safe routes using maps and metal detectors to find IEDs, when he stepped on one, leading to the loss of both his legs. He also suffered severe hand injuries.
Spc. Bryndan Keller, 25, another wounded warrior, shared that he found the game to be an ?enjoyable experience,? saying: ?I like the competitive aspect of it, and it was a great workout.?
Zevan shared further: ?One wounded warrior said he missed ?the smell of ice? and thought he?d never be able to play hockey again after losing both his legs? others appreciated learning a new skill as well as experiencing the speed on the ice.?
Michael Vaccaro, USA Warriors Hockey sled hockey coach and a Veteran himself, on the other hand, shared: ?It?s rewarding to help a fellow veteran get back to enjoying a sport that he used to enjoy and thought he might not be able to play again, or a veteran who is just learning the sport. These guys make it look easy. With their military background, they have learned to adapt and overcome the challenges.?
