Tanzania inflation continues to ease in April

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - Tanzanian inflation maintained its downward trend in the year to April, pushed lower by a slowdown in food price rises, official data showed on Wednesday.

The year-on-year inflation rate eased to 9.4 percent in April from 9.8 percent in March and has now fallen in 14 of the last 15 months. In December 2012 it was unchanged.

The National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement that commodities prices climbed at a slower rate in April compared to March.

Consumer prices in east Africa's second biggest economy climbed 0.5 percent in the month of April, the same rise as in March.

The year-on-year inflation rate of food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased to 10.2 percent in April compared to 11.1 percent in March.

Annual inflation rate for energy also eased, declining to 21.6 percent in April from 22.6 percent last month.
