Petition launched against $54m sports precinct redevelopment

A PETITION to save Torquay's Tavistock St sports precinct from redevelopment has been launched.

Craig Hoppe, who has lived in Tavistock St since 1980, is concerned about the Fraser Coast Regional Council's plan for the new $54 million precinct near the airport.

"The current precinct is central where it is at the moment," he said.

"It's a waste of time moving and they can build a big grandstand out at the airport but what's the point?"

Mr Hoppe said the proposal to merge clubhouses into one at the new area wasn't a good idea.

"They've spent a lot of years working hard to make their clubhouses their own," he said.

Councillor for open spaces and events Darren Everard said there were a few options for the existing grounds in Tavistock St.

"They could be sold or their use changed to more passive recreational pursuits therefore requiring less maintenance and upkeep," he said.

"How much is raised if land was sold would depend on market forces at the time but the aim would be to gain the best return for ratepayers.

"Savings can also be made or funds redirected if the use of an area changes, that is from a park to passive recreation or natural area which require a different level of serving (mowing and maintenance).

What's included?

About 40 hectares of the site has been earmarked for development.

So far the concept plans look at but are not limited to BMX, netball, soccer, hockey, rugby league and tennis; a premier field; indoor multipurpose stadium; satellite hubs to service each of the sports and an internal road network which could double as a criterium track.
